Renowned for his signature “Afropolitan” sound, a distinctly metropolitan techno with heavy traditional influences from his formative years in South Africa, Black Coffee pioneered what has quickly become one of today’s leading dance music genres globally.

Each evening’s soundtrack will envelop the entire venue through a newly installed, custom L-Acoustics Soundsystem. The colorful, high-energy visuals that Black Coffee is known for will appear in high definition on The Brooklyn Mirage’s new, hyper-realistic 270-degree virtual environment, boasting 30K resolution, 100 million pixels, and over 3,000 tiles. Each performance promises a uniquely immersive journey through Black Coffee’s broad discography and an experience unlike anything the DJ has ever done before.

This residency is a full-circle moment for the iconic venue and award-winning DJ. Black Coffee performed at The Brooklyn Mirage in 2019, 2021, and 2022 and sold out every date, including the 2022 season closing weekend, where he curated a three-night lineup of performers, including Marshall Jefferson and DJ Pierre.

Over the next two years, Black Coffee headlined and sold out two venues that enjoy a co-promotional relationship with Avant Gardner: the legendary Madison Square Garden and the raw industrial backdrop of Under the K Bridge. The former marked a historic moment as Black Coffee became the first African DJ to sell out Madison Square Garden.

Sonus Croatia 2025 Adds More DJs and Live Acts to Its Stellar Lineup

2025’s edition of Sonus Croatia takes another bold step up with a raft of international line-up additions. Taking place on the pristine shores of Pag Island from August 17 – 21, 2025, this foremost Adriatic escape – in partnership with the world’s leading live events experience creator, Insomniac – bolsters the programme further with a slew of additional DJs and live acts from across the electronic spectrum.

Amongst these new additions are tech house titan Andrea Oliva, CLR founder Chris Liebing, and a special b2b set between Metamorfosi label head and Italian innovator Joseph Capriati and Detroit maverick Seth Troxler. There will be fresh and heavyweight house from Josh Baker, heady cosmic tech from Sweely, and lofty selections from Serbia’s Tijana T.

All shades of techno come from the likes of Klangkuenstler, Lilly Palmer and UNCAGED’s Marco Faraone, with the younger Berlin generation represented in DJ Gigola and Elli Acula, whilst Moritz Hofbauer (live), Julian Wassermann (live) and Deniz Bul perform as part of a FCKNG SERIOUS showcase alongside labelhead Boris Brejcha.

The 12th year of Sonus Croatia is a three-way partnership between veteran and industry-leading event producers Time Warp, Balkans electronic music tastemakers We Love Sound, and Insomniac, which is best known for its iconic EDC events – all of whom ensure this year’s Sonus will be the most ambitious yet.

What’s more, London’s Enzo Siragusa will headline an exclusive FUSE stage partnership – his tastemaking label and party brand has very much set the tech house agenda for the last decade-plus and takes in elements of dub, minimal and garage to light up dance floors worldwide.

Further stage partners include Basel’s nightlife and cultural hub Nordstern, plus the return of cult party crew Space Miami, and the raw underground of LA’s Factory 93, each adding their own brand of magic to the proceedings.

Importantly, Sonus Croatia will stay true to its original founding principles which means that the music comes first from meticulously crafted production to the sound systems – it is these values that have cemented the festival as a European and global standout for over a decade.

2025 sees the return of the lauded boat parties, alongside the eminent afterparties and pop-up events. The beachfront venues for this unreal escape are Aquarius, Papaya, Kalypso, and Noa Beach Club – the Noa Beach Stage is all new for this year and allows people to swim and dance in the water all week long for the first time.

Serving as a launchpad for exceptional emerging talent, EXHALE brings together rising artists with heavyweight international names, each bringing their uniqueness whilst collectively sharing a vision of boundary-pushing, future-facing electronic music. Now on its sixth iteration EXHALE‘s landmark compilation series is a beautifully executed case in point for everything the imprint stands for.

Featuring fifteen tracks, VA006 is a blistering tour de force of razor-sharp talent and cutting-edge techno. Argentine producer SAILØ‘s ‘Nobody‘ kicks us off in fine style with icy vox over typically pummeling rhythms, followed by French artist and Reborn Events co-founder Uphoria who takes us to rave euphoria with the aptly titled ‘Rave Dance Drink‘.

Fresh talent is delivered in spades from 19 year old Dutch hard techno producer STORM, who serves up thunderous bass, haunting synths and electrifying drops on ‘Hypnotise‘, followed by Polish-born DJ and producer Noemi Black, whose track ‘Lost In Sound‘ combines transcendent rave energy with obliterating bass.

One of the most popular newcomers in recent years, and for good reason, German producer AKKI gives us behemoth peak-time techno shot through with chill-inducing choirs and a stirring string section on ‘Lost In Time‘.

Rotterdam’s IOSIO steps up for track six with his uniquely bouncy sound: full of groove and pump, ‘Echoes Of Heaven‘ is a bouncy sonic delight. 2HOT2PLAY team up with Poland-based artist Linds for a meaty spot of trance-infused techno on the infectious ‘Type Of Beat‘, followed by emerging Italian producer Flour, whose signature brand of trancey hard techno goes full throttle on ‘Galattica‘.

It’s merciless beats, ravey acid and clear instruction to ‘dance all night’ on Brazilian artist Molothav‘s lethal ‘Acid All Night Long‘, followed by Até & Salin‘s irresistibly energetic call to arms ‘Mess‘, where cheeky vox and metallic synth stabs pounce over driving rhythms. Heading up the final third is Neapolitan producer Lowerzone with ‘I’ll Take You Higher‘, with driving rave stabs from the off, transporting listeners to the heart of the rave.

Two UK artists are next up – coming in strong with his own signature brand of hi-octane beats against a deliciously stark soundscape is returning Liverpool artist Alex Farell with ‘Move Your Body‘, while Scotland’s GALLØ brings balance to proceedings with the atmospheric cut ‘Mantra‘.

Oiz Records label boss Onelas makes his debut with the pulsating ‘Summer Walker‘, and closing out VA006 is multi-hyphenate duo Amstra & Sosya with the transcendent peak time chugger ‘Take Me Down‘.

4 Ways the Music Industry is Grooving to the Rhythm of Sustainability

Sustainability is a term that was not associated with the music industry. If anything, this industry was turning itself into the poster child for high carbon footprint and environmental degradation.

Advocates of sustainability have been talking about greening the music industry for decades. Only recently have solid effective measures been put in place. This is not to imply that the industry no longer generates any waste.

However, if it keeps its current pace of eco-consciousness, we may find fewer concerns surrounding climate change. In this article, we will dive into four main initiatives that hold immense promise for the music industry’s sustainable future.

Elimination of Plastic Waste

Musical festivals and live events are notorious for generating plastic waste. A 2024 report found that an average of 4 billion single-use cups from these events end up in North America’s landfills every year.

As alarming as it is, it doesn’t have to be this way and is not in every case. Gradually, many music event organizers are adopting initiatives to eliminate plastic waste. These include provisions for biodegradable cups and reusable food packaging.

One example is the BYOBottle campaign supported by events like the Joshua Tree Music Festival. It advocated for reusable bottles and the installation of refill stations across the venue.

It seems like a culture of shared responsibility is slowly rising among music festival goers. Even artists are embracing the boundaries of sustainability actively. Many are choosing to tour by land and undertake tree plantation for every concert ticket that sells.

Besides that, proper waste disposal practices are being given precedence. They form an important part of the ‘zero waste’ goal. This means separate receptacles are placed at concerts to segregate the recyclable waste.

Replacement of Teflon-Coated Guitar Strings

This change towards sustainability is not only recent but also one that faced much controversy. It was not until 2020 that folks in the music industry started expressing their concerns over guitar strings.

It’s difficult to wrap one’s mind around the fact that something so seemingly insignificant can be an environmental problem. However, a guitar’s strings are its soul, shaping the instrument’s voice and overall character.

It was found that modern guitar strings were coated with a group of water and grease-resistant chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The reason cited was that these chemicals could enhance the playing sound and experience.

Utility was also the excuse given to use PFAS in the manufacture of Class B firefighting foam or Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF). Sadly, it backfired as firefighters began filing lawsuits against PFAS manufacturers due to injuries like cancer. The latest AFFF lawsuit update states that the litigation’s scope has expanded from kidney and testicular cancers to those affecting the thyroid and liver.

PFAS also led to municipal water contamination. TruLaw shares that these chemicals first seep into the soil and eventually reach the water table, affecting drinking water. Given their hazards, are they worth a marginal improvement in the guitar-playing experience?

Though some musicians are presenting tone-deaf arguments supporting PFAS use, many are stepping back. They are advocating for non-toxic alternatives that align with the worldwide PFAS ban.

Will we resume traditional materials like steel or nickel? Perhaps, until an equally effective but safer alternative is discovered.

Concerts Powered by Renewable Energy

Music event organizers are fighting tooth and nail to harmonize their events with the environment. This means they cannot bypass the need to adopt sustainable energy sources.

Did you know that live music events generated a shocking 400,000 tons of carbon emissions in 2023 alone? This is in no way sustainable, and organizers are recognizing that.

They are powering their concerts with the help of renewable energy sources, mainly the following:

  • Solar energy in the form of solar panels
  • Wind energy generated by small portable wind turbines
  • Kinetic energy using dance floor tiles that convert the energy of dancing into electricity

Energy-efficient LED lighting systems are also being used. Artists are helping reduce their carbon footprint by avoiding private jets. Many are cheerfully saying yes to sustainable tours and concerts: the ‘do-re-mi’ for the environment’s well-being.

One artist who has received much criticism for her private jet use is Taylor Swift. In stark contrast to an entire genre of memes dedicated to her insensitivity are bands like Massive Attack. The latter’s all-day music festival, called Act 1.5, was believed to be the lowest-carbon concert of its size.

Green Merch and Packaging

A key aspect of promoting sustainability in the music industry is to let fans join in. This is exactly where the importance of green merch and packaging enters.

Fans now have a way of supporting their favorite artists without causing environmental harm. The truth is many would appreciate it since the general US population is gradually gravitating towards sustainability.

To put things into perspective, nearly two-thirds of US adults are concerned about climate change. 61% consider it to be a matter that worries them a ‘great deal.’ With such public support, artists are only set to receive more love from their fans with green merch and merchandise.

Non-toxic and recyclable materials are being used to manufacture t-shirts and other merchandise. This includes the dyes used to color the goods. Harmful chemical processes are being eliminated during production as much as possible.

Another aspect of green merchandising is reducing waste, right from the design stage up until production. Examples include the use of organic fabrics and collaboration with eco-conscious vendors, among others.

The beats of sustainability are expected to echo within the music industry for years to come. These small yet decisive steps usher in a new era, which goes beyond being musical.

Artists and organizers that implement concrete carbon-neutral initiatives will encourage fans to be equally responsible. Perhaps then we would stop hearing how the live music industry is a carbon sinner; it will become a powerful catalyst for change instead.
