Richie Hawtin unveils his evolutionary new show DEX EFX X0X

Electronic music icon, DJ and techno pioneer Richie Hawtin announces DEX EFX X0X. New for 2024, DEX EFX X0X will debut exclusively across two shows at global stature festivals Movement Festival Detroit and Sónar Barcelona.

As two of the most important events in the dance music calendar; Movement Festival and Sónar each hold significant historic precedence where Richie Hawtin has premiered new show concepts over the last three decades and experimented with unique ways of performing, including Plastikman Live‘ (2010) and his CLOSE concept (2017).

Anchored within the immersive fluidity in digital manipulation that Hawtin‘s DJ performances have become synonymous with, DEX EFX X0X builds upon the concepts of his ‘Decks, EFX & 909‘ series of compilation from 1995 – 2005, using all the performance tools available today.

DEX EFX XOX demonstrates equally the early foundations and future of DJing, representing an exciting evolutionary step in Richie Hawtin‘s lifelong commitment to the development of the electronic music scene.

Richie Hawtin
Richie Hawtin

Here’s what Richie Hawtin had to say about it:

“Moving away from the current trend of shows giving the priority to the image rather than sound, DEX EFX X0X brings the audience back into an immersive sound & lighting experience. More club than concert. DEX EFX X0X continues my personal exploration of improvisation using modern performance technology resulting in a unique sonic narrative for each and every show.”

A genuine original and futurist, Richie Hawtin‘s critical acclaim spans the creative realm of the fine art community to the technological vanguard and his Plastikman live shows have continually set new standards of visual art and technological innovation. As a performing artist, he is constantly pushing conceptual frontiers, and always moving the scene and its sound forward.

At every turn since in a long illustrious career, his position as a visionary technologist has been established with a series of innovations; pioneered new ways of performing, from early experiments with digital audio and visual media. He co-designed his own DJ mixer (the MODEL 1 from his own PLAYdifferently company); the Bullfrog educational synthesiser (with Erica Synths); created numerous innovative music technology apps; co-founder of the dominating electronic digital retail platform, Beatport; and is largely considered responsible for the shift from physical to digital DJing.

“Richie has consistently stood at the forefront of electronic music, always pushing the boundaries of sound and setting the standard for live performances. We’re excited to host the debut of Richie’s DEX EFX X0X performance – Movement attendees are going to be in for a truly unique experience from one of the most innovative artists of our generation.” Jason Huvaere, Paxahau co-founder / Festival Director, Movement Music Festival

“Richie Hawtin never stops moving forward, he’s always exploring how he can use technology to evolve his music and sound, as well as how it’s presented in front of an audience. It’s why we’re always keen to have him at Sónar: we know that he brings something new and different to the stage every time.” Enric Palau, Co-Director, Sónar Festival

Always sharing these artistic and creative leaps through his shows, Richie Hawtin welcomes as many as he can to ideas and experiences that would have seemed pure science fiction when he began his career as a DJ and producer in the emerging techno scene in Detroit. It seems only fitting, therefore, that his return to live performance with DEX EFX X0X will be performed at two of the world’s most prestigious festival stages.

Reinier Zonneveld and Kiki Solvej join forces for ‘Time’

The latest collaboration between powerhouses Reinier Zonneveld and Kiki Solvej, “Time,” released on Filth on Acid, is a mesmerizing trip into the depths of progressive beats and trance-infused melodies. Departing from their signature techno sound, the duo unveils a softer, more introspective side with this release. When these two pair up they continually show why they’re one of the most exciting collaborations in electronic music today.

Kiki Solvej‘s ethereal vocals add an enchanting layer to the already hypnotic atmosphere, drawing listeners into a trance. With its irresistible rhythm and dreamy ambiance, “Time” invites audiences to surrender to the music and get lost in time.

With slight acid twinges and synth keys this release is full of an ethereal energy that fits so well as the sun begins to shine more these days. This is a refreshing change from the more heavily weighted productions that dominate today and shows this duo’s vast production ability.

Len Faki returns as Hardspace for Part 3 of his recognized remix-series

Len Faki returns as Hardspace for part three of his new remix-series, giving his favorite tunes a new life on the dancefloor.

An unusual pairing at first glance, Hardspace takes up Soundstream’s anthem Love Jam from 2006, the kind of Detroit-tinged disco edit to drop in the peak moment of techno set.

Then it’s rewind time to another decade, when DnB-Veteran Alex Reece was remixing Motorcity icon Kenny Larkin. Hardspace’s mix of Loop 2 retains the playful jazzy notes and growling bassline of the original and turns its old-school breakbeats into a snappy 4×4-groove.

The deadly effective tool that is Andrei Morant’s Simple Addition makes for a perfect base to build upon for Faki’s signature editing style, emphasizing the plastic shuffle of grooving percussive elements while adding some booming low-end.

DJ Rush features with two vocal-heavy cuts on this release: first up the Russian Roulette hymn I Believe, which sounds even trippier in the stripped-back Hardspace version; then a creepy while sexy mix of Don’t You Love Me that steadily builds tension for minutes before slowly giving way to a seductive beat.

Closing out with a bang, Damon Wild’s Gearbox from 1995 gets a rework: the full power acid-riff is still working its magic but now sounding much more punchy and to the point in this tidied up Hardspace edit.

“Ekko’s voice and style are incredible. When I heard her voice for the first time, I knew that we were a great match and I am very happy that we found each other and could make this collaboration. We’re both on the same wavelength and we express that with the song. I’m looking forward to the release and further collaborations with Ekko.”

Korolova Shining
Korolova, Ekko – Shining

Speaking about the release Ekko added:

“‘Shining’ is about sticking by each other’s side no matter what challenges come our way, and a reminder that even when things seem bleak, there will always be a little light shining through. The song was written late 2022 and was the second song created that day.

It happened quickly and organically and immediately had such a profound presence through the theme we developed. I am beyond excited to collaborate with the legendary Korolova on this record, and can’t wait for her to elevate the song and bring it to new heights on stage.”

Hailing from Ukraine, Korolova stands as a breakout sensation in the melodic house and techno realms. Her rapid ascent in the electronic music landscape is nothing short of meteoric.

Massano unleashes thrilling Drumcode EP Debut, ‘Telepathic’

One of melodic techno’s biggest breakout stars, Massano steps up for his Drumcode EP debut.

The emerging DJ and producer from Liverpool already gave us a taste of his elite studio capabilities via the fantastic ‘Betrayal‘, his contribution to last year’s Drumcode A-Sides Vol.12 release – one of the highlights of the compilation. Massano‘s sound hits with a fantastic punch, characterized by super charged sound design and powerful melodic riffs with key releases on Afterlife and his own Simulate to date.

His ‘Telepathic‘ EP reinforces why we’re rightly so excited to have him on Drumcode. The title track is a juicy psy-laced stomper, propelled by a menacing low-end vocal that adds plenty of atmosphere to the cut.

Destructure‘ is formed around rattling percussive effects, before euphoric melodic layers build in intensity throughout the second half. When the two elements coalesce, we’re treated to a track with immense peak-time power, that never loses its unique edge. ‘The Method‘ is a melodic ace, shifting between laser-kisser dynamism and full throttle bass- driven energy.

Massano – Telepathic

Here’s what Massano had to say about the release:

“Drumcode has had a huge influence on the type of music I make and was undoubtedly one of the reasons I started making music in the first place. The label has been one of the main staples in my electronic music journey and have consistently released some of my favorite tracks over the past 10+ years.

So, needless to say, it is an honor to be releasing this EP with them and I am super grateful for the opportunity to express another side of my music to an audience and platform as prestigious as Drumcode.”

Ultra Naté unveils official music video for “Happy Feeling” + 9 huge remixes

Ultra Naté delivers a remix pack quite literally for the ages as she and fellow producers Russell Small (The Freemasons) and DNO P unveil the full package for HAPPY FEELING, alongside the long-awaited official video for the blistering original cut.

“A clip to go with “HAPPY FEELING” was really imperative for me,” Ultra comments, “and it had to convey not only how the song makes me feel, but how I want the viewer to feel. Lots of popping color in an iconic locale was immediately the plan. What better place than my favorite quickie getaway – Miami!

Aside from the gorgeous sun, beach and palm trees, there’s Miami’s glitzy energy on the backdrop of a rich, cultural landscape. I wanted to capture all of that, and I’ve been super lucky to find such a talented DP like Katie Simbala and an amazing team of creatives to help bring the concept to life!”

Ultra Naté remixes
Ultra Naté Happy Feeling remixes

Brimming with vibrant color and energy, the video more than matches the single’s upbeat energy shot by shot, its visuals underscoring the track’s message of positivity and providing the perfect doorway to a huge run of remixes that drop on the same day.

Running the historical gamut of house music, the curated selection moves from 70’s-inspired nu disco and 80’s-etched synth pop to booty luv house, bass-centric NYC underground and mainstage rave-up anthems. Remixes and reworks coming from Cevin Fisher, Les Bisous, Slowz, D’Angello & Francis, 808 BEACH and Odyssey Inc.

“It’s time to sprinkle some happy dust on clubland dance floors!” says Ultra. “I’m really proud of this collection of remixes and it’s timed perfectly as we move through Spring into the Summer season. The HAPPY FEELING remix package gives you everything from poolside cool to peak hour bangers, but most importantly it’s a feel good tune that makes you sing-a-long and gets stuck in your head!

The goal when I wrote this song, was to remind us all that no matter how dark and bleak things can get, there is still something transcendental about music.”

Ultra Naté

Inspired by vintage Giorgio Moroder, Odyssey Inc. set their flag in the sand from the moment the needle drops. Delivering a remix designed to shred the dance floor, Mark Jones and Paul Gullefer’s take is thunderous, relentless, driving, and absolutely dripping in tuff-disco glamour. Slowz lives up to his name, bringing the tempo right back down, infusing the single with soft percussive pads and twinkling, delicate synth runs that drench everything in shimmering shades of delicate, Miami, 80s-style pop.

John “J-C” Carr and Bill Coleman’s 808 BEACH mix harkens back to a classic era of US House music. Their chugging, jackin’, peak-time driver is the perfect conduit for Ultra’s vocal to soar across the top, pulling and accentuating the strings of the original to maximum effect.

Having collaborated with Ultra on 2023’s Top 5 Pointer Sisters’ rework, DANGEROUS (So Dare Me), Les Bisous drop a preppy, peppy Summer disco edit that runs Stock Aitken Waterman-influenced brass and synth sections alongside a bubbly, French touch bassline.

The surprise mix of the pack belongs to Belgium’s D’Angello & Francis of Smash The House. Straying away from traditional funk and house elements, the pair swing in a rave-ier edit, ramping the BPMs up for a cut that wouldn’t be out of place on the hard house and trance dance floors of the late 90s and early 00s, or the new generation of clubbers demanding their anthems be harder and faster.

Leaning into the trademark and pioneering Freemasons elements of Russell Small that allowed him to stand shoulder the shoulder with the likes of Guetta, Sinclar, Basement Jaxx et al – the strings, piano, and swirling guitars – the Happy Faith remix celebrates everything the classic Funky House era had to offer.

Taking HAPPY FEELING up to current times, and already proving a major hit on Traxsource where they enjoyed an early exclusive release, are the Top 10 Cevin Fisher Remix and Cevin Fisher Beats Remix. The former is a boiling deep house cut, the latter a scorching tribal take, both a willing celebrant of Ultra’s vocal topline by one of New York’s finest.

Finally topping the remix package off is the favorite Original Club Mix which was the package’s inaugural single release.
