Mija teams up with Cakes Da Killa and Wreckno on new single ‘I Wanna Be A Big Star’

DJ/Producer and supreme tastemaker Mija offers the final single from her forthcoming “NO RULES” EP, and she’s brought some heavy-duty friends along for the ride. Available now on Mija’s never b alone.mp3 imprint, ‘I Wanna Be A Big Star’ is made in collaboration with Hip-Hop artist Cakes Da Killa and rising queer rapper/producer/DJ, Wreckno.

The single is inspired by the classic 1990 documentary film, ‘Paris Is Burning.’ The spirit of freedom, self-expression, and a celebration of life radiates from the song. Old-school vocal samples and sharp-tongued lyrics from Cakes Da Killa and Wreckno complement Mija’s classic throwback production.

“‘This is a house tune I wrote inspired by the documentary Paris Is Burning. After I wrote the demo, I asked legendary artists Cakes Da Killa and Wreckno to jump on the track, and both of them delivered sickening verses. I wanted to keep the raw emotion of the original samples juxtaposed with quick and dirty house drops. Something you can dance, to something you can cry to,” Mija says.

I Wanna Be A Big Star’ is the latest piece of music off Mija’s forthcoming “NO RULES” EP, following the release of the previous single ‘A Woman Comes Into A Room’ – with one song dropping per month leading up to her fall No Rules tour.

Mija’s identity as an artist is rooted in the fantastical and the DIY independent.
She is capable of striking the balance between futuristic textures and immediate emotional states, grounding even her most experimental sounds in vivid reality. She has her eyes on the horizon and her heart in the present. Her first EP, “How To Measure The Distance Between Lovers” (supported by Pitchfork, The Fader, and Vice), cemented her talent as Mija took full control of her narrative.

Follow-album ‘Desert Trash,’ also released on her own label imprint, further explored underground genres of indie rock, Drum n’ Bass, House, and Glitch. As 2023 unfolds with singles and EPs, Mija‘s focus has grown into individualistic-minded art built around expression and exploring her own personal identity.

juuku returns to Dim Mak with “Ripple” feat. grandpa jules

juuku returns to Dim Mak with “Ripple” – an Experimental Bass track that pairs distorted electronic instruments and unconventional basslines with emotive indie-pop lyrics by grandpa jules.

Alongside the pristine production that juuku is always known to provide, “Ripple” is a standout, given the infusion of emotive indie-pop lyrics courtesy of the talented grandpa jules. His soulful vocals add a layer of depth and vulnerability to the track, making it a profound and unforgettable listening experience. As the lyrics weave a tale of love and longing, they resonate with raw emotion, drawing you in and leaving a lasting impression.

On the track’s inception, juuku shares, “The label sent me a bunch of tracks to sift through, and I heard these insane grandpa jules vocals that resonated with me so much. For the past few years, I’ve felt I lost my light/happiness in the world, and I became so jaded in my day-to-day life—trying to chase something that I don’t even have a clear definition of. This song represents to me the need to let the ripples subside so I can clearly see what I’m here for”

juuku, an electronic music pioneer, defies genre boundaries with his innovative soundscapes and emotionally charged compositions. Emerging from the forefront of Experimental Bass, juuku has solidified his position as a standout artist with hits like “Late Hour,” “Still,” and “Wait For Me,” amassing millions of streams.

His affiliations with major record labels like Mr SuicideSheep and Dim Mak have marked his journey with significant milestones. Infused with raw and relatable themes, juuku’s music strikes a deep chord with listeners, enhanced by collaborations with vocalists that add an extra layer of vulnerability to his compositions.

In a rapidly evolving musical landscape, juuku continues to push boundaries, reshaping electronic music and inviting audiences into a captivating world where experimentation seamlessly intertwines with emotion, defining the future of music.

Nitefreak joins forces with &friends and Phina Asa to make Tomorrowland Music debut

African producer Nitefreak reunites with Afro-house collective helmed by Sean Thomas AKA &friends and key vocal collaborator Phina Asa for a joint-release entitled “Ike Onu”, out now via Tomorrowland Music.

This formal collaborative production between Nitefreak and &friends follows up the success of Nitefreak‘s remix of &friends‘ pivital single “Ode Ireti” ft. Oluwadamvic and eL-Jay. The remix saw unprecedented, viral success – receiving massive radio and touring support from top names in the space including Keinemusik, the infectious chorus “o-le-le” has become a staple in the sets of many titans of dance music.

Celebrating 1 year since “Ode Ireti“, &friends is also in the midst of a Remix Competition for the pivitol project track “Ode Ireti” in partnership with Beatport and Label Radar for aspirational producers to share their take on the song.

Ike Onu” means “Stronger Together” in the native African language of Igbo. The song is smooth and soulful, with Phina Asa‘s vocals making their way back to the &friends soundwaves for the third time this year, following up her first single “Dangerous” and the projects’ Armada Music debut with an official cover of Armin van Buuren‘s “This Is What It Feels Like“.

The poignant percussion of the track boasts both signature sonic elements that belong to both &friends and Nitefreak all on their own, but find their way to the same track in perfect harmony. The lyrics of the song are heartfelt, reflecting on the challenges of the modern world while recognizing the complexity of life and importance of unity and collaboration for growth and resilience. The meaning of the track aptly demonstrates the continued creative partnership that has helped put both Nitefreak and &friends‘ productions on a world stage.

Sharing on the lyrics of the track, Phina Asa says:

“The idea behind this song was that I thought about the world today, and how it doesn’t look how it used to. It’s getting more challenging and complex, and in life we can’t thrive on our own without any help. We need people to support us, push us, hold us accountable, and help us grow.”

Bringing a fresh and unique approach, Nitefreak is at the forefront of the Afro Progressive House movement. He is managed by the Forbes-recognized label Deep Root Records and has since then seen a large upswing in global popularity.

&friends is the musical concept and brainchild of New York based Sean Thomas. Drawing the breadth of his inspiration for these musical works from the global cultures, Sean had a vision to create a project embodying tradition, culture and community culminating in the coining of &friends. He and the collective recently made their Live Debut on one stage in Egypt in August at SilverSands North Coast and released their track “Duro” featuring Dotun.

2023 is already delivering a thoughtfully produced, artfully composed compilation of works from both Nitefreak and &friends respectively. Through a holistic, multifaceted approach, both artists are set to make their way to even more dance floors around the world to unite us all.
