Exclusive Interview with DJ and producer Ophelia

With a signature sound and unique style, Ophelia certainly stands out for being a truly impressive artist. With a classical music background, her passion for music, drive and talent proves with every release and through every live performance that she’s set to reach new heights and conquer dance floors all over the world.

We sat down with Ophelia to learn more about her beginnings as a live performer and her experience so far behind the mixing decks.

Hi Ophelia, how are you?

I’m fantastic and marvelous.

Do you remember your first live performance? Where was it and how did it go?

Probably ‘The Drifters’ at a local outdoor concert. I was around 7 years old. I grew up on Motown so it was a real treat even though there weren’t many original members on stage. I still have memories of some of the songs and how the stage and lights looked.

What’s your usual routine to get ready for a live show?

I have a gig bag that has everything I need for a live show in it. I have a large metal chain necklace with my USB. I do a quick checklist and make sure I have more cables than I need, I’ve learned that playing raves and random outdoor locations that my live sound experience comes in handy in case something happens.

If I have a hotel room I just put hot towels on my face and just lay in bed in a meditative state. Then I put on my outfit and makeup and grab a water and something with caffeine.

What do you look for in a track to add it to a live set?

I purposefully have a lot of tracks that are random numbers. I just scan the song and look at the key and throw it in and always improv my setlist. If I spent the time to put it on my USB I must have saved it to my list of tracks I like. Normally, it’s a track that I heard and knew it would either mix well or stand out as a solo piece. Anything clean and minimal gets added to the random folder.

What’s your favorite thing about mixing live?

4 CDs and completely random tracks. All I do is problem solve the entire set and try to create something so unique and impactful. I have to read the crowd to see what it sounds like.

Can you tell us what would you say it’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your time performing live?

Playing it safe and just barely fading in and out of tracks is great if you want to pose for photos and video. When I’m actually DJing and I see a photographer or videographer I always try hard to pose because when I’m in a deep mix I can have a gnarly musicians snarl since I’m deep in thought and emotion.

What’s the funniest or most exciting story you have involving a live show?

I played this trendy after hours in Los Angeles (where I’m from) and I got kicked off the decks because the promoter who was also a DJ said I wasn’t playing 4/4 and the party would end early unless I played “Techno.”

Are there any new skills or gear would you like to incorporate in the near future? If so, which ones?

I use an Ableton Live setup with a Push 2 but I’d like to use a Pioneer RMX-500.

Which venue or festival would you like to perform at in the future?

I personally reached out to Berghain and they got back to me and said not at this time. So next time. 🙂

What piece of advice would you give to a DJ that’s starting their live performance/ music production journey?

I think practice is great. I think learning rhythms is great. Listen to other people’s mixes and see what you like about them. Everyone has different styles that fit different vibes. I also recommend finding a DAW that works for you no matter what other people recommend.

Charlotte de Witte and her label KNTXT enjoy biggest year yet

Belgian techno titan Charlotte de Witte and her label KNTXT are reflecting on what has been their biggest and most successful year yet.

In terms of releases, Charlotte de Witte dropped two acclaimed EPs on KNTXT, ‘Universal Consciousness‘ and ‘Apollo‘. Further highlights included records from Amazingblaze, Alignment and Indira Paganotto. Meanwhile, RPM oversaw a release from Acid Asian. A turbo-charged, digital-only sub-label of KNTXT that builds velocity around emerging talent and sounds, RPM was launched to meet the demand of the ever-evolving electronic music scene.

On the gig front, Charlotte de Witte was at the helm of multiple sold-out KNTXT events all over the world. Some of the key events were at Printworks London, 516 S Anderson Street in Los Angeles, Brooklyn Mirage in New York City, Arca in São Paulo, Mandarine Park in Buenos Aires and stage takeovers at Tomorrowland and Ziggo Dome in collaboration with Awakenings.

Perhaps most significant of all was the fact, the revered artist renewed her status as highest ranked techno DJ in the world via the coveted DJ Mag ‘Top 100’ poll, and became the first techno (and female) DJ to close the main stage at Tomorrowland. She also teamed up with fashion brand Filling Pieces to create an exclusive collection, designed jointly by Charlotte and Filling Pieces founder Guillaume Philibert, which was launched at the brand’s flagship store in Amsterdam during ADE. A typically invigorating week, ADE also featured a nine-hour party at Ziggo Dome in collaboration with Awakenings.

Looking ahead, 2023 promises to be even bigger, including a huge KNTXT Konnected show at Flanders Expo in her native Belgium on 4th February. “I’m super excited to take KNTXT back to Ghent again for another massive night at the iconic Flanders Expo,” she previously explained. “We, the KNTXT family, will prepare something unique for you this night! Something you’ve never seen before. This will be massive!”

To celebrate what has been a landmark year, Charlotte has launched the 3Y Collector Box, an exclusive vinyl box set celebrating the third anniversary of her boutique label KNTXT. The box set includes 5 limited edition vinyls released in the label’s third year, featuring music from Charlotte de Witte, Amazingblaze, Alignment, and Indira Paganotto and also includes an exclusive limited edition 3Y box t-shirt. The box set was custom designed for the anniversary by designer Adriaan Tas and is based upon the initial KNTXT branding with a high-end approach to the label’s aesthetic. The 3Y Collector Box is for purchase HERE.

Charlotte de Witte has become known for her dark, stripped-back brand of techno, acid and anything high energy. She’s often crossing borders but maintains a deep form of respect for the underground. Highlight performances across the continents – including being the first techno (and female) DJ to headline the main stage at TomorrowlandMixmag and DJ Mag covers, high-ranking positions in the charts and lists confirm her status as nouveaux techno royalty.

The world’s #1 techno act, Charlotte de Witte is an uncompromising force of nature who is determined to make 2023 even better than this year.

Paul van Dyk announces new VENTURE X event concept

Paul Van Dyk

Paul van Dyk, one of the most iconic and influential names in dance music, announces his new VENTURE X live event concept which launches in North America this February 2023.

VENTURE X is an exciting new concept where the master DJ and curator sources from the finest trance, progressive house, and techno music available and brings it all together during one incredible evening. van Dyk famously feeds off his fans, focusing on the improvisational art of the craft and editing tunes on the fly.

Familiar sounds are presented in an entirely new context, with a focus on embracing the unexpected. It’s that moment when you hear a snippet of a song you love but find your jaw dropping in awe over the direction and journey van Dyk is taking you on. It’s unpredictable…it’s unmissable…it’s VENTURE X defined by Paul van Dyk.

Paul van Dyk Venture X

“VENTURE X allows me to explore the width of what electronic music means to me, not just what people expect me to play. It allows me the space to play what I think people should really know, feel, and be exposed to. People know me for trance but there is so much more. VENTURE X allows me to do this as a musical concept because I won’t play 130 BPM straight through but rather a wider musical experience.

With most DJ sets I find you either have techno but missing the progressive sequence that takes you on a journey or you have a progressive sound that’s missing the punch. For me, that’s what it’s about, the drive, the push, the pull, and the memories that you create,” van Dyk says.

VENTURE X kicks off on February 17, 2023, in Toronto, Canada at Toybox and will be presented additional cities including New York City, Montreal, Pontiac, Denver, Portland, San Francisco, and Austin.

Tickets are available here.

Austin Leeds & Danko Skystöne drop “Oblivion” on Flow Music

Flow Music’s self-titled record label returns with a collaborative melodic house release from Austin Leeds and Danko Skystöne, which also features a remix by André Sobota.

The record label focuses on original music with links to the Australian club scene while also arranging remixes from influential artists such as Dave Seaman, Super Flu, El Mundo and Anthony Pappa.

Danko Skystöne is a Melbourne-based artist who is known for his progressive house sound. He is a resident DJ on two radio stations, Global Groove Radio on Insomnia FM and Deeper Realms on Saturo Sounds U.K. In addition to his regular Melbourne club gigs, he is also a skilled producer and mastering engineer with solo releases on labels such as Mindwarp Records.

Austin Leeds is an American artist from Miami who has become a regular collaborator with Danko Skystöne and together they have released their tantalising tracks on Rebel House Official, Sirup Records, Perspectives Digital and Clubsonica. Austin Leeds has also featured solo tracks on labels including John Digweed‘s Bedrock.

Brazilian artist, André Sobota provides the solo remix on the release in the epic style. He has featured on leading melodic house labels such as Global Underground, Black Hole Recordings, microCastle and Anjunadeep.

Oblivion” is the original track on the release and it has got an uplifting atmosphere with moody undertones. Its gliding synths, ethereal vocal textures and flowing percussion create a mesmerising groove that unfolds with breathtaking eloquence.

André Sobota‘s remix of “Oblivion” strips back the percussion to draw more attention to the original’s synth parts and add an expansive atmosphere. He also restructures the track so it unfolds with captivating suspense as it builds towards a spine-tingling breakdown.

Is Electronic Music Good for Studying?

iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube have one thing in common – they’re some of the go-to sites for music. If you visit these platforms to hear your favorite music, you may want to tune in a little more often. There are numerous benefits associated with studying or working while listening to music. Whether you’re prepping for an exam or studying for a class, or looking up write my essay online services, it’s nice to turn on a little music to help you tune out all the noise around you.

The idea that music improves concentration and, in turn, your productivity isn’t a new concept. An 1883 magazine found that studying while listening to music improves concentration, reduces distractions, and lessens boredom. Another study by the University of Birmingham in 1972 concluded that background music could make you more efficient in repetitive tasks.

Let’s face it, very few people like to study. But how cool is it that music can be just what you need to get through the books easily while making learning more productive? Pretty cool, right? Want to hear more? Let’s dive in and discover how studying the right kind of music may be more than just music to your ears.

Does Electronic Music Help You Study Better?

Just as certain types of chocolate pair best with certain kinds of coffee, some music genres are more conducive to studying than others. There are a dozen different genres that students can listen to while studying. The common perception is that slow and classical music is suitable for studying. Although the type of music you listen to while working or studying is a matter of personal preference, electronic music refreshes your mind in no time. It augments your concentration and focus and creates a relaxing ambience. So, exploiting the wonders of music to drown out habituation is undeniably a practical strategy. Everyone wants to stay productive and stress-free irrespective of the amount of work they must cover.

Well, there’s a logical explanation for why electronic background music for studying is the best for your focus. Electronic music is a genre of music that employs electronic musical instruments, digital instruments, or circuitry-based music technology in its creation. Electronic beats and instruments stimulate your mind and enable you to concentrate on the task at hand. It excites the neurons in your brain and triggers them to follow a different activity pattern distinctive from the typical routine.

Besides, electronic music encompasses other sub-genres, such as EDM, trance, and bass music. These types of music act like an activating pill for you while studying. And if you’re an active person, electronic music for learning can definitely make you a better student as it sharpens your concentration.

Studying requires a lot of commitment, concentration, and energy, and electronic music stimulates the brain cells to bring about these effects. However, sometimes staying up late at night studying while listening to music can be tedious and dull. There are multiple ways to keep yourself up and alert, such as drinking coffee while studying, but sometimes the coffee doesn’t work either. The brain can get tired, and you may end up dozing off. We have a limit on how much information we can process at once due to a finite energy supply. No amount of coffee or music can change this fact.

So, if you have several assignments and are tired of listening to electronic music while working on them, you can seek better academic help from college paper writing services. In such situations, you definitely need assistance that lifts your spirits right away while enabling you to take control of your studies. You can make music your close companion just as much as a professional essay writing service like CustomWritings.com. This company is the go-to site for all your academic writing needs. Benefits of Electronic Music for Studying

So, do you prefer total silence or listening to music while studying? The jury is out on which is better and electronic music has clear-cut benefits. Listening to this genre of music puts your mind into study mode and has numerous benefits. Here’re some advantages of tuning in to the right electronic music tunes.

Improves focus

You require as much focus as possible when studying. Electronic music helps lock out all other noises that can interfere with your concentration. If you’re the type who gets easily distracted, try studying with some electronic music playing in the background, and you’ll notice a huge difference.

Boosts mood

It would help if you were in the right mood for maximum study effectiveness. Listening to upbeat music often brightens the spirit. Focusing on your studies or tasks at hand becomes easier when you’re in a good mood. Electronic music helps you concentrate on your studies for longer hours with the anxiety and fear of upcoming exams or complex assignments long forgotten.

Increases endurance

With exams around the corner, students try to push themselves to the limit to cover the semester’s work in the few remaining nights. When you have been drinking too much coffee, more than necessary, but you still cannot push yourself to stay on the books for longer, worry not. The secret is playing your favorite electronic music in the background while you study. The music will help you relax and enjoy reading.

Enhance memory capacity

As mentioned before, listening to music improves your mood while reducing anxiety and stress. As a result, your brain’s memory capacity improves, which enables you to retain more information for longer. Numerous research studies suggest electronic music positively impacts memory by reducing stress levels, increasing alertness, and enhancing cognitive recall.

Helps with relaxation

Students must be stress-free to overcome different challenges every day. Maybe it’s in the middle of the semester, and you need to start reading your notes to refresh your knowledge the entire evening. Find a great electronic music playlist, lie on a couch, chill by yourself, and start thinking about nothing. The beat will help you get distracted from all the problems and dive into words of mixed and tuned sounds. Relaxing for 15 minutes while studying will refresh your mind and make you feel more relaxed.

Boosts performance

You’ve probably found yourself in a situation where you must complete an assignment overnight. In such a case, coffee can be your best friend but cannot make time go slower. Fortunately, electronic music with a fast bitrate can significantly boost your performance. Listening to music makes your mind become equated to the rhythm, and you start working faster.

Final Word!

Music is an integral part of our lives, with many people enjoying doing chores and exercising to a background rhythm. However, it can also help students to study as it improves their memory, focus, and concentration. Everyone has different music choices and can listen to any song. But electronic music is a pretty good choice when it comes to selecting a music genre specifically for study sessions.

The fast tracks and upbeat music keep you awake and active, enhance memory capacity, increase endurance, and boost mood. It is the easiest way to strengthen your concentration span and perform better in your studies. Create a curated list of electronic music for studying, and you’ll be surprised to learn that you work best listening to electroacoustic music tunes.
