ALPHA 9 returns to Anjunabeats with “Dreams”

Few artists share such a storied history with Anjunabeats than Artem Stolyarov. Redefining trance and progressive with a festival edge in the early naughties, the likes of ‘Around The World’, ‘Kate’, ‘Rebound’ (with Mat Zo) and ’The Wonder’ helped shape the sound of the genre.

With Anjunabeats once again evolving as we enter our twentieth year, Artem comes home, reprising his ALPHA 9 alias with ‘Dreams’.

While 2019’s ‘Before The Dawn’ (feat. Kameron Alexander) showcased ALPHA 9’s darker side, ‘Dreams’ is a return to the effortlessly catchy riffs that made him such a beloved act. With Miami Music Week just around the corner, it’s a reminder of the sun-soaked tracks that have made Artem such a revered producer.

ALPHA 9 Dreams

“ALPHA 9 is coming back home; to a place where its music always belonged [Anjunabeats]. I’ve been waiting for this week to come for a very long time,” ALPHA 9 says.

Ferry Corsten and Purple Haze unite for latest single ‘Flanging’

ferry corsten
via Sean Nunley

After closing out the year with Gabriel & Dresden collaboration ‘I Am You’, Ferry Corsten wastes no time in carrying on the UNITY project with his first release of 2020, drafting in fellow trance pioneer Sander van Doorn under his Purple Haze moniker for their first collaboration, ‘Flanging’.

With both artists’ careers spanning decades, their paths crossing countless times across all continents, a collaboration between the pair is long overdue, and during a period where both continue to experiment creatively with sounds and push the boundaries sonically, it’s the perfect time for the combination, and ‘Flanging‘ is testament to this aligning of the stars.

A heavy kick drum and sub bass get the track rolling, quickly joined by a low mid synth that is layered over the sub. A distorted synth melody glides from note to note, slowing down to make way for a heavily reverbed vocal and anthemic arpeggiated lead as both musical accents weave intricately before stripping back during the drop, making full use of the flanger effect that gives the single its name.

On ‘Flanging‘, Ferry Corsten said: “many times Sander and I have discussed a collab over the years. Always being too busy and too focused on other things, it never happened. Until now. We finally sat down and flushed out this banger of a track called ‘Flanging’. I am very excited to bring this latest UNITY collab into the world.”

On his involvement with the UNITY project and ‘Flanging‘, Sander van Doorn said “After so many years talking about it, we finally ended up in the studio. It was a real treat working with Ferry and I couldn’t be happier with the result. Best of both worlds!”

With previous UNITY releases coming in the form of collaborations with the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Ilan Bluestone, BT and most recently Gabriel & Dresden, Ferry continues to make the most of his connections within the trance world with the latest outing.

Uniting the community for a better cause, proceeds from UNITY releases are donated to VH1‘s Save The Music Foundation, an organisation launched to reinstate music programs in public schools, which to date has raised over $53 million and helped over 2,100 public schools.

EXIT Festival and Serbia pledge to plant almost 1 Billion Trees to help fight climate change

exit

That music can indeed help change society is not a new idea for EXIT, the award-winning music festival that started two decades ago as a youth movement for peace and freedom in Serbia and the Balkans.

Twenty years later, the Serbian Government has just adopted EXIT‘s Green R:Evolution initiative in which the Festival juggernaut, backed by several local environmental organizations, calls for the mass reforestation that will increase the country’s forest cover by almost 50%.

The Serbian Government has begun developing strategic plans for countrywide mass planting actions according to which Serbia’s forest cover is expected to increase from the current 28% to at least 40% of the country’s total surface area. This increase means that the Government has pledged to plant almost 1 billion trees in the years to come:

“Serbia is willing to do its share to fight climate change. We are committed to European Green Deal and with the support from our EU partners we hope to accomplish this very ambitious goal” said on this occasion Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Brnabić.

EXIT Green Revolution

EXIT‘s plans don’t stop there as this is considered only as of the first step at home, while the true goal the festival has set is to push this initiative onto the global level. Various scientific researches in recent years have shown that deforestation alone causes an increase in the total carbon dioxide emissions bigger than all the transportation put together! It is estimated that the planet reforestation increase from the current 30% to at least 40% of Earth’s land surface could be a key factor along with other efforts in fulfilling the global goal of Net Zero CO2 Emissions by 2050.

EXIT Festival has recently received the support of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for the reforestation of Fruška Gora mountain in Serbia. In her open letter, she highlighted that environmental protection is the highest priority of the European Union and announced the Green Deal initiative that aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent.

In order to further contribute to this goal, EXIT plans to gather and give visibility to numerous environmental organizations, throughout the globe, at its big 20th-anniversary edition taking place from the 9th to the 12th of July 2020 at the colossal Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia.

They will be joined under the EXIT Festival‘s project symbolically called LIFE STREAM, in which live broadcasts from selected performances will take on an innovative approach. For the first time in festival world, the live streams will feature additional footage with environmental videos and messages.

Beside raising awareness on climate change and environmental crisis, audience from all over the world will be able to choose the organizations to which they wish to donate directly.

This way, people will be able to nominate and support their local environmental organizations as well as choose to help those who are at the global forefront. EXIT plans to develop Life Stream as open-source platform and share it with other festivals and events who want to support the cause. The pilot edition of Life Stream was launched last October in Amsterdam during ADE with a special DJ set of leading breakthrough duo Artbat and the support of Greenpeace.

EXIT Festival‘s environmental message has been at the forefront of its social activism since the start. After hosting activists from the Standing Rock tribe, twice, on its Main Stage, EXIT will give the spotlight to activists from leading global environmental organizations in 2020 as well. The Festival will extend an invitation to youth from around the world to join the fight for the preservation of all life on Earth with the message that only united we can make a real change.

Octan Ibiza returns bigger and better than ever

Octan Ibiza

After their much talked-about debut season, Octan Ibiza returns bigger and better than ever on Thursday, 7th May 2020 to kick start their second summer in Ibiza.

Their opening party will be hosting all the key residents and new ones, plus some tasteful headliners that will bring those serious non-stop grooves we became accustomed to last summer. The season programming will see weekly residencies in addition, and will also be showcasing a series of special one-offs all summer long.

In 2019, the brand new club quickly established itself as an Island and cult favourite for those looking for a more underground and intimate experience. Octan‘s Basement is the perfect underground space that gives you a raw and intense energy alongside it’s dark aesthetic, low ceilings and a world class sound system. The style is sleek and stripped back with low key lighting and immersive lighting all making it an atmospheric space of pure hedonism.

Octan Ibiza

Last summer saw Octan host Apollonia‘s first weekly residency, Planet Claire, which offered the underground heads serious sets from the likes of Nicolas Lutz, Traumer, Cristi Cons, Francesco Del Garda, Doc Martin, Anthea, Pearson Sound and many more. You also saw Steve Lawler return to the Island with his Warriors brand who had artists Enzo Siragusa, GUTI, Yousef, East End Dubs, Seb Zito, Darius Syrossian and more join them in the Basement.

New for this summer, the Terrace has been fully redone and improved plus there have been various stylistic renovations inside the club. What’s more, the iconic artwork that adorns the outside of the venue will be all re-done by a brand new artist this season – that will be the case at the start of every new summer. The club will be open across a number of nights during the week, with special parties next to new resident brands all catering to the beat in cutting edge house, techno and minimal.

Keep your eyes peeled for the first wave of names, but be assured that Octan is set to be the most talked about underground venue on the White Isle this summer.

Early Bird €15 tickets available here!

Monticule finalises its stunning lineup for 2020 edition

Monticule Festival
via Rubens Ben

Heading into its sixth year, Monticule finalises its stunning lineup for 2020. Having already announced a tantalising selection of names, the festival welcomes further talent from across the dance music spectrum, featuring showcases from an array of influential labels and the scene’s most exciting trailblazers.

With activities away from the dancefloor also on offer, Monticule continues to boast a diverse and global programme for all attendees that’s simply not to be missed.

The previously announced and eagerly anticipated Malka Tuti showcase expands to 24 hours, with I’m A Cliché label boss Cosmo Vitelli and Hugo Capablanca joining the likes of Khidja, Asaf Samuel & Katzele, Shari Vari live, Full Circle, Fantastic Twins live and Optimo (Espacio) in taking dancers on a dizzying and ambitious trip across day and night.

Monticule 2020 lineup

The unmissable showcases continue, as the pioneering Zozo, mesmeric Eva Geist live and Sacha Mambo play in the prestigious name of Macadam Mambo and Andrea live, Zenker Brothers and Surgeon represent the iconic Ilian Tape sound, the latter having just released the twisted techno of The Golden Sea EP on the imprint earlier this month.

Acclaimed Berghain resident Efdemin makes his Monticule debut and it’s destined to be one for the history books, while supreme selector Lauren Hansom touches down to showcase her vast record collection and strictly individual spirit with Multi Culti boss Dreems demonstrating his “multiply your mind” label ethos with thrilling results.

Berlin’s LackRec crew is well supported thanks to slots for Fadi Mohem, Marie Montexier and Victor, along with Benedikt Frey, who will treat dancers to his unique channeling of electro. DJ Dustin and Vlada from Giegling will make appearances across the weekend, as well as activist of the Såo Paulo LGBTQ scene, Cashu, whose politically-charged set should make for a festival highlight.

Further features can be found away from the dancefloor and within Monticule‘s quieter corners, as the nearby swimming hole and picturesque waterfall entices weary dancers to take a peaceful dip or limber up during yoga lessons. Thrill seekers can get to grips with a skateboard mini rap, while festival goers can also tap into their creative side through painting workshops or turn their gaze to the sky with astronomy classes.

Only 1h30 drive from Toulouse, festival-goers can also sample the famed cuisine and wine of the area at their leisure, with local producers and food trucks serving up the tastiest grub throughout the 5 day stay.

5 day tickets for Monticule Festival are now 149€ + booking fee. 3 days weekend ticket and group tickets also available.
