51st State Festival reveals NYC triple threat for this year’s edition

51st State Festival

51st State Festival has revealed its first lineup announcement for 2020, celebrating its sixth year with some of the most defining figures in house music and its associated genres.

This year’s truly transatlantic programme is led by a trio of New York’s finest house acts: Stealth boss and Grammy-award winning producer Roger Sanchez will join the Trent Park party alongside an exclusive London festival performance from preeminent production/remix team Masters at Work as well as Body & Soul (François K, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit), the trio who transformed a six-year long club night into a global dance staple.

The New York natives will be joined by fellow house music royalty Todd Terry, House N’ HD (Terry Hunter and Mike Dunn), Eli Escobar and the French ambassador of the genre Dimitri from Paris.

Representing the other cradles of dance music, Detroit don Derrick May will rock the festival’s foundations with his pioneering techno along with Ibiza regulars Amine Edge & DANCE, who will bring their unique blend of hip hop infused deep house. The festival will also be joined by a very special guest, announced in late March.

51st State Festival

Live and direct, US R&B & House royalty Jocelyn Brown will deliver a soul-raising set, performing smash hits like her iconic ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’, while The Brand New Heavies will be keeping the funk alive with a touch of 80s magic. Soul II Soul founder Jazzie B will also be on hand with his era defining club-ready take on soul, as well as show-stopping diva Barbara Tucker and The Cool Notes’ Lorraine McIntosh.

Adding a Jamaican edge to the festivities, dancehall champion Charly Black, who will make his only London festival performance of 2020 at 51st State, and sound system crew The Heatwave will be sure to have everyone moving.

Flying the flag for UKG, the bass will be pumping all night long courtesy of sharp cuts from stalwarts of the scene Wookie, Matt Jam Lamont and Majestic. Collective Heartless Crew will also be in effect alongside the Dreem Teem’s DJ Spoony and Mikee B and sample master and Daft Punk collaborator Todd Edwards.

Following a sell-out 5th birthday in 2019, the festival will return to Trent Park on 1st August with a greater range of food vendors and bars throughout the site. The VIP area will also receive some special treatment with an extended viewing platform, complimentary massages, glitter, a vanity area, and photo booth, all soundtracked by House FM DJs. Entertainers like the dazzling Mirror men and the shakin’ soca dancers will also make their return, alongside an expanded range of to-be-announced pop up stages showcasing more genres than ever before.

Bedouin announce Saga Ibiza move to Pacha for the 2020 season

Bedouin

Since its inception in 2017, Bedouin’s Ibiza residency, Saga, quickly cemented itself as one of the island’s most revered parties, celebrated by locals and visitors alike. Pete Tong praised it as “one of the most successful season residency debuts of all time,” and three seasons later, it maintains this reputation, taking home the DJ Awards title for Best Night in Ibiza in 2019.

This year for Season 4, Saga welcomes a new beginning with Bedouin announcing the news that the party will be moving from Sundays at HEART, to Fridays at its new home PACHA Ibiza, the legendary institution known for being the first modern-style night club on the island.

Here’s what Bedouin had to say about their move to Pacha:

“We’re truly thankful to the entire team at Heart Ibiza and to Guy Laliberté for giving us the platform to bring our vision to reality. We’re looking forward to this next chapter where we’ll be joining forces with one of the island’s most iconic venues. It’s an exciting moment and we can’t wait to show everyone what we have in store for this next season.”

Bedouin presents Saga at Pacha Ibiza

Nick McCabe, CEO of Pacha on the move:

“It’s an honor to have one of the most renowned residences on the island join us at Pacha for the upcoming season. The Bedouin residency will perfectly complement our programming and lead to another successful summer in Ibiza for Saga, Bedouin, and Pacha for years to come.”

Under Bedouin‘s creative direction and Pacha‘s platform, Saga‘s musical programming and surrealist production will build on its original ethos aiming to take it to all new heights at its new home. Bedouin will take over Fridays alongside a well-curated lineup which will be performing on the club’s newly updated layout within a new immersive production that builds on the extraordinary audio-visual experience that Saga is known to offer.

While the SAGA brand continues to grow, the fundamental vision remains the same. It will build on the original concept of telling a story in an enticingly, beautiful, yet dramatic way.

Exclusive Interview with Modern Disco sensation Birdee

Birdee

Eclecticism is at the heart of all great DJs, and one man who embodies this simple but often overlooked fact is Birdee. A DJ and producer of considerable repute, his breezy, good-time jams are the perfect sound to a day on the beach. From disco to house to soul, Birdee is a man whose sound manages to perfectly straddle the line between discerning and accessible.

As such, it’s perhaps no surprise that he’s found favour with everyone from Pete Tong to Purple Disco Machine, with the latter in particular someone who adopts a similar sound. Based out of Los Angeles, Birdee’s far-reaching sound is winning him fans around the globe and is sure to do so for some time yet if his purple patch continues.

Indeed, his latest release (the brilliant Can’t Get Enough) is sure to prove a hit over the coming months, while also in the pipeline are releases featuring the likes of Barbara Tucker. A ringing endorsement if ever there was one! We got in touch with Birdee over email recently, and here’s what he had to say on a wide range of topics…

I wanted to start by talking about the unfortunate passing of Andrew Weatherall. As someone who adopts a similarly eclectic sound, is he someone who’s had a big influence on you? What do you think it was about him that made him such an inspirational figure?

Yeah I woke up the other day and saw Ed from the Chemical Brothers’ post on Instagram – I got to the end of the post until it really sank in that he was talking about Andrew Weatherall’s passing. I just couldn’t believe it. He definitely had a big influence on me, my friend who taught me the basics of djing was a huge fan of his and we would listen to Two Lone Swordsmen all the time. As much as it sounds like a cliche’, the most inspirational thing to me was his work with Primal Scream – since I have a rock background and didn’t really get dance music in my teens/early twenties.

Screamadelica changed everything! I think what made him so inspirational is the fact that he chose to forge his own path and refused to go down the superstar dj route, playing only the events he wanted to play, working only with the people he wanted to work with. He was in the music business for the pure love of music, and that should be the main reason to be in it.

So the winter in Europe is finally coming to an end and we can all start looking forward to warmer climes! How has the winter been? And what are you most looking forward to about the months ahead?

I haven’t really had much of a winter luckily since I am based in LA these days and just came back from a tour of Australia. So my winter has been great so far haha. But now it’s actually a little chilly in LA so I’m spending a lot of time in the studio…for the months ahead I am looking forward to a lot of new music being released and being back in Europe to tour – the next gig is at Oslo in London on March 7, then Shindig Festival at the end of May.

So tell us a bit about how you prepare for a set these days. Do you generally pick tracks on the fly or will you spend hours preparing tracks that go well together etc?

Usually what I will do is make a playlist of 50/60 tracks and then play it by ear on the night. I do spend quite a bit of time prepping my sets, but that’s so that I can be comfortable picking tracks on the fly. But if I get to a certain point in my set – I will have maybe a group of 3 or 4 tracks that I know go well together.

Do you consciously choose between old and new music? Or is that irrelevant to you?

I don’t really think about that when I prep for a set, so I would say it’s not very relevant to me.

As something of a disco connoisseur, what’s your take on where the sound is at right now? What modern artists, labels and parties should we be looking out for?

I always end up playing a lot of stuff by Yuksek, Mighty Mouse, Qwestlife, Kapote, J Kriv, Mousse T, Hifi Sean, Mark Lower – these are names who are trying, to my ears at least, to innovate the disco game rather than relying on familiar samples. This is what we need more of today – if we don’t come up with new music the scene will eventually stagnate, but there are a lot of ways to keep it interesting.

Of course there are also people doing excellent remixes and edits of classics and do them really well – Dr, Packer, Late Nite Tuff Guy and Young Pulse are all excellent, and Joey Negro is untouchable – not forgetting Seamus Haji who has been in the game for a long time. Chewy Rubs and Fingerman are also two names who consistently impress, as well as Yam Who who runs Midnight Riot. Faze Action are always inspirational. Also need to send a shout out to Body Heat in Italy, an excellent label run by my good friend Rocoe.

Was there ever a case where you were derided for your appreciation of disco?

Haha I don’t think so actually, I guess most of the people I hang around with are very open minded!

Do you think preparation or intuition is a more important trait as a DJ?

To me it’s a mix – it’s hard to have great intuition without the necessary preparation. I’m sure there are exceptions, but that’s how it works for me.

Tell us a bit about learning to read the crowd. Is this something you have picked up on a lot more over the years? What do you look out for?

Oh yea for sure, it comes with experience – I used to plan my sets a lot more when I started. I’m not sure exactly what I look out for – it’s kind of a magic art in a way, not that I want to make it sound too crazy haha. But really it’s about intuition, as mentioned above. It really depends – some nights you’re totally on form and you totally gel with the vibe of the place and the crowd and it’s totally magical, some nights it’s still good but not quite as magical. I remember reading a quote from Marcel Vogel talking about a specific night where he played and he said something like “the records were playing themselves”. If you ever had that feeling, it’s the most amazing feeling in the world.

So let’s chat a bit about how you prepare for your gigs. Do you spend hours going through Beatport? Or Discogs? Do you create playlists etc? And how long was it before you settled on a certain method of prep?

I actually don’t use Beatport at all, I get most of my music on Traxsource – which is wonderfully curated and very easy to use for a dj like me. The rest is either promos or Bandcamp. From there I analyze tracks with Mixed In Key (which is helpful to just know which tracks will go together, although I have a classical music training so I can usually tell by ear) – then stick them in Rekordbox where I set up cues for different parts of the track. So it’s quite a long process actually but it seems to work…I’ve been doing it this way for at least 3 years I think.

When you’re DJing, are you conscious of the need to educate the crowd musically? Or do you more just go with the flow?

I wouldn’t say I ever consciously think about educating the crowd…I have to say most of the crowds I play for are already very educated. I guess I’ve been booked in the right places!

What are the key things to get right for you when making a tune – the drums, capturing an emotion, a synth line?

Oh it’s hard to say! Definitely capturing a vibe yes, but honestly every track starts differently – I don’t really have a formula. I could start playing a bassline, or finding a vocal snippet that inspires me, or messing around with a synth line…the main thing is the groove though. At the end of the day it’s dance music that has to work on a dancefloor, so the groove has to be tight.

You worked with Barbara Tucker recently which must have been something else! What’s next on the list of goals and what other vocalists would you love to work with?

Working with Barbara was amazing and definitely a dream come true! I have to thank Nick Reach Up who suggested we work with her, they have been friends for a long time. I actually just finished another track with one of my dream vocalists, but can’t say anything right now – you’ll find out soon though! And my next single Can’t Get Enough features Andre Espeut on vocals, who is also amazingly talented.

And how do you know when a track is finished from your side?

I never do haha! Usually I have to force myself to stop before I go crazy – or drive my girlfriend crazy playing the same 16 bars for 5 hours on loop.

Can you tell us a bit about your ideal DJ setup? What are the benefits of using this setup?

My setup is very simple really, two Cdj’s 2000 and a DJM mixer. The benefits of it is that it’s industry standard and very easy to use, so all I need are my two flash drives and I’m good to go. I would love to play more vinyl since I started off with that and still have a big collection – but it’s not too practical, which is why even dj’s with a huge vinyl background like Joey Negro also mostly use Flash Drives these days.

What is your ideal party, set time, location, crowd, crowd size, venue etc?

Ohhh that’s a tough one, I’m a libra! So I can never choose haha. I’m honestly just as happy playing a sweaty basement as I am playing a festival. I did a bit of both in Australia recently – and all the gigs were amazing in a different way.

Finally, can you let us in on a secret weapon of yours that you’ve been playing a lot recently?

My remix of Rainbow Team’s Dreaming – I played it out a lot and it’s always gone down very well! It should be out sometime in March.

Keep up with Birdee on Facebook and Instagram . Birdee’s Can’t Get Enough (ft. Andre Espeut) is out soon via Hot Sunday Records.

Paradise Ibiza moves to Amnesia for 2020 season ‘The Age Of Love’

For the first time since its inception in 2012, Jamie Jones and Paradise will relocate from its previous home of DC-10 to the revered dance music temple of Amnesia for the 2020 season.

Widely regarded as one of the best clubs on the planet and winner of the ‘Best Global Club’ award on no fewer than four occasions, Amnesia is often described as the birthplace of Balearic Beat. Paradise will now have free reign to create magical moments on the fabled Amnesia terrace, ushering in a new musical journey on the island.

Here’s what Jamie Jones had to say about this:

“After 8 amazing years at DC10 I felt like it was time for a new era of Paradise. I thrive the most when I’m creating new stories with my music and my projects, and I really wanted a new challenge for paradise and myself. Musically the 2 most inspiring dance floor moments I’ve had in ibiza and maybe ever have been at Amnesia.

“When that Terrace is on it’s one of the most epic experiences anyone can have as a clubber. When we combine the positive energy, music and vibe of Paradise, the magic of Amnesia and the insane production we have planned it’s going to be a wild fresh and exciting experience that I know will fulfil my desire to take us to the next level and beyond”.

The line-up for the 2020 season is yet to be announced but Paradise has an unrivalled reputation for hosting the biggest names in dance music. In 2019, they had the likes of The Martinez Brothers, Joseph Capriati, Maceo Plex, Marco Carola, Luciano, Charlotte De Witte, Hot Since 82 and Nicole Moudaber performing across their 17 weekly parties.

Amnesia, on the move: “Everyone at Amnesia is super excited about Jamie Jones’s and his Paradise crew taking over our dance floor on a weekly basis. It’s one of the most talked about and special nights in Ibiza & around the globe , with ground breaking DJs, music loving crowds packing out the events week in week out, Jamie will carry on serving up his musical masterclasses time and time again.

“We feel Amnesia is the perfect fit for the next chapter of the Paradise story as it is the coming together of two of the White Isle’s most iconic brands: to experience the good time vibes and world class soundtrack that Paradise provides on the world famous Amnesia terrace is sure to become one of dance music’s most essential experience”.

Jamie & Paradise maintain a strong relationship with DC-10 and look forward to shared future endeavours. But, it’s time for a new chapter in the story of Paradise Ibiza, and the move to Amnesia ensures this lauded party brand continues to keep things fresh and exciting for revellers and music lovers across the world.

Hey Nathassia! Welcome to Rave Jungle. How has 2020 kicked off for you so far?

Hiya! It’s been a bit of a whirlwind with finishing off several new releases and a great new collaboration cumulating in two singles with renowned South American DJ/producer D3FAI.

We love the sound on your single ‘Light of The World’ – can you tell us more about the inspiration for this track & the message behind it?

Thank you! It’s all about the future of love merging with technology and how the onslaught of augmented reality and A.I. will affect us all.

How long have you been in the music industry & what has the evolution of your career been like?

It’s been about five years and I’m still surprised by the amount of growth and potential twist and turns I am experiencing as both an artist, live performer and songwriter.

Your sound has a distinctive world music vibe that really stands out. Which elements do you aim to include in your productions?

My productions are a reflection of my background, I am Dutch and Indian with South American roots, so I like my music to be electronic in nature but influenced by exotic sounds and instruments.

Can you highlight one of your own favourite singles and what makes it particularly special to you?

One of my favorites is “Parasite”, it was the first time that I collaborated with Stenchman, and it always gives me a real blast performing it live on stage with my band.

What does your live set schedule look like this year?

March is insane with the worldwide live stream of my show with the band to all my fans broadcasted from my London studio, and then I’m off to South America to perform at Lollapalooza Festival in Argentina!

Finally, what else has you excited as we head further into 2020 and a new decade?

I’m excited to film on location in Buenos Aires for my new single, a mini India tour, finishing my next studio album and everything else this magical year has to come!

Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream announces 2020 World Tour

All Day I Dream

All Day I Dream has announced an extensive summer tour for 2020, including two simultaneous residencies at Cova Santa in Ibiza and Scorpios in Mykonos.

Two of All Day I Dream‘s biggest hallmarks in recent years are its residencies on the Isles of Ibiza and Mykonos. Lee Burridge and his troupe of Dreamers reprise these oceanside appearances in 2020, taking over MykonosScorpios club which will be hosting the daytime soirée six times over summer, while Ibiza‘s Cova Santa receives nine dates. London and Barcelona also comprise the tour’s European leg.

It was nearly a decade ago on a Brooklyn rooftop when Lee Burridge conjured magic with All Day I Dream‘s first dance. The name has since become synonymous with a global house music movement, drawing tens of thousands each year into its intricately decorated spaces with spellbinding sonic curation.

Now, All Day I Dream is prepared to continue its tradition of spreading joy and connectivity across the world with the announcement of its 2020 calendar. Over 29 dates have been announced, with more premiere destinations to be revealed soon.

All Day I Dream 2020

All Day I Dream returns to a multitude of beloved North American cities through 2020, touching down in the urban jungles of San Francisco, Toronto, Miami, and of course, its birthplace of Brooklyn for day into night festivities. All Day I Dream also makes an anticipated return to Denver’s Sculpture Park, a venue whose towering art pieces welcome the event’s dreamlike aesthetic.

Los Angeles remains a prodigal home for All Day I Dream, having built up a dedicated community of dancers and house aficionados alike over the years who bring their shared passion to the floor each winter and spring. 2020 sees a new stage in this blossoming relationship with a debut at Pershing Square—one of the city’s most central locations that offers striking views of the Angeleno skyline.

On the label end, All Day I Dream remains a hub for the finest in deep, melodic varieties of electronic music. In the past year, the label has housed stalwarts like Sébastien Léger, Roy Rosenfeld, and Tim Green while championing forward-thinking new acts like Double Touch, Bantwanas, and Amonita.

Label boss Lee Burridge, along with longtime production partner Lost Desert, also released their first album Melt to the world in 2019 to great acclaim. Expect 2020 to be another year of ethereal releases carefully crafted by Lee’s trusted friends and labelmates.

Lee Burridge on the announcement:

“All Day I Dream is going to be reuniting with many of the beautiful locations we’ve been fortunate enough to call home in recent years. The unique vibe at these parties continues to draw people towards it and that special feeling when you’re lost in the music out on the dance floor, surrounded by friends and strangers alike, all smiling under blue skies is something that happens all the time and that we are really proud of.

Afternoons filled with fun, laughter, dancing your ass off and meeting pretty amazing people is a place I want to spend a lot of time. Lucky for me I do and I hope everyone else that’s joined us in the past will be back for some more this Summer. 2020 is a very special year for us and I see clearly our small part in making your’s is special too”.
