Correlation Between Music and Math

Music and math are deeply intertwined, even though it may seem that they are separate subjects. When you study music, you may notice that math is present there. Math gives you information about the rhythm, the measure, the beats, and how to sing or play that song. Fractions and ratios are very important to music, but also math.

Knowing these basic terms and how to measure and understand them helps you understand other mathematical or music concepts easier. It has already been proven that music boosts your study skills, but not just any music genre can do this. To be productive and efficient, you need instrumental music that has no lyrics because they act as a distractor.

There is a strong connection between music and math. But what is the correlation between them? It may be that these skills are developing independently of each other or one is influencing the progress and development of the other?

Music, Math, and the Brain

Everything is happening in the brain, but different parts of it. We already know that the right hemisphere is the creative one, while the left hemisphere of the brain is the logical and structured one. So, it seems that the centers that light up when you study math are in the left part of the brain, while the ones that light up when you study or listen to music are in the right part of the brain. Students have many assignments and homework to take care of and it seems that in some cases, the emphasis is put more on math than on music. Even though they are connected.

Recent research has shown that each brain hemisphere is processing the frequencies and sounds differently. Which means that you can reach both of them with different sounds. This, in turn, means that you can activate the centers in both hemispheres with certain sounds and frequencies, possibly creating more balance between the two sides of your brain.

This is a nice discovery and even though further research is needed, it poses an important assumption. That by identifying the sounds that light up the left hemisphere, you can activate it and help it work more balanced. Which, in turn, leads to improved cognitive abilities and math skills. There is recent research that proves that if you play music to students when they are learning math or giving a math exam, their productivity is improved by up to 40%. So, solving linear algebra problems and solutions might be easier than before just by listening to music.

The Mozart Effect

The Mozart Effect might be among the first ‘fake’ effects that were created and then given to the public. Parents were told that if they play Mozart’s songs to babies when they are little, they will improve their cognitive skills considerably and be more intelligent. Of course, this is not an accurate assumption, but a kernel of truth still exists.

You do not have to listen to Mozart specifically but to music. There are many subgenres of classical music: upbeat tones are for the right hemisphere, while minor ones are for the left one. Many composers and producers are not working on making music that lights up both hemispheres of the brain, so the future lies ahead.

Math and Reading Music

Music can indeed boost the productivity and efficiency of students, but also trigger some of the centers in their brains and make them more active. This allows for new and easier connections to be made and learning and studying can be smoother than before. Music has positive effects on the study experience of students, but what about math? How does math help, if it does, students to study music?

Well, it seems that students would not be able to play music if they do not know math. Music relies heavily on math, in the sense that both of them have patterns. Music has rhythms, beats, and measures, and all translate to fractions and ratios. Those who learn how to play an instrument already know that they need to have a good understanding of math concepts to play the song. So, it may seem that music and math boost each other, especially because they are connected by an invisible bond.

The interesting thing about music and math is that some composers made wise use of mathematical concepts in music. This is the case of Pachelbel’s Canon in D, a very popular song that is used in weddings and big events every year. The song gives you a nice feeling and vibe, making you relaxed and filling you with positive emotions. Researchers say that the popularity of some songs might be due to their mathematical way of composing them. It seems that humans have an innate inclination to liking structure and repetition over chaos. And this might be the reason why some songs are more popular than others.

Conclusion

The correlation between music and math is a strong one. They seem very different, but they are so deeply intertwined. It still isn’t clear if they develop independently or are boosted by the others. For the moment, it seems that you need math to understand music, measures, and beats and to learn how to play an instrument.

On the other hand, listening to music makes your brain more active and it can boost your productivity and efficiency. And songs that were created using math seem to be the most popular and successful because they trigger our innate feelings.

Black Coffee, Virgil Abloh, Tale of Us, The Martinez Brothers, Seth Troxler, Damian Lazarus, Michael Bibi, Perel, Chloé Caillet, and Mink are set to provide world class soundtracking across the brand’s touchdowns in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.

New York will be the first to host a CircoLoco takeover, running two nights during Halloween Weekend in an undisclosed Brooklyn warehouse location. South African superstar and Grammy nominee Black Coffee will take on headlining duties on Friday, October 29. He’ll be accompanied by Off-White leader Virgil Abloh, Life and Death owner DJ Tennis, and PVBLIC XCESS’ Chloé Caillet.

The following night, Cuttin’ Headz bosses and IMG signees The Martinez Brothers take the stage alongside Crosstown Rebels founder Damian Lazarus, Solid Grooves’ Michael Bibi, DFA and Running Back’s Perel, and Mink.

Virgil Abloh, Damian Lazarus, and Perel will hit the road with CircoLoco as it journeys South and West. Come the party’s anticipated Art Basel Miami debut, the brand will reunite with Damian Lazarus, a crowd favorite in the city for his iconic Get Lost marathons.

Fellow icons Seth Troxler and Tale of Us will also join CircoLoco for its Miami festivities, before heading West to Los Angeles for its day-into-night bacchanale. It is there that Virgil Abloh and Perel will also make their return to the CircoLoco stage, treating guests to golden hour performances for the ages.

CircoLoco is one of underground dance music’s longest running brands, representing house and techno for over 20 years through its parties at Ibiza‘s DC10 and around the world. As its reputation has grown, CircoLoco’s dance floor has become a principal intersection between underground dance music and elements of fashion, art and wider culture.

The recent launch of CircoLoco Records saw CircoLoco partner with acclaimed video game creator Rockstar Games, with the goal of fusing the physical and digital worlds of entertainment to support and elevate dance music culture worldwide.

Cosmic Gate sets release date for new artist album ‘MOSAIIK’

On August 20, Cosmic Gate will release the first stage of their hotly anticipated new artist album. Trailed throughout the early parts of 2021 by vanguard single releases and stunning live streams, ‘MOSAIIK’ will platform nine sensational cuts from the GRAMMY-nominated duo.

Mirroring the same delivery system adopted by their 2017 ‘Materia’ albums, seasoned CG fans will already be familiar with ‘MOSAIIK’ release dynamic. Shared across two ‘Chapters’, ‘MOSAIIK’s ‘II’ styled title is a direct nod to the group’s eleventh artist long-player.

From its earliest stages, ‘Chapter One’ has already brought some shake-up moments, not least its launch single – the deeply soul-searing (and streamed-to-infinity) Diana Miro-sung ‘Blame’. Since have come some eye-popping Miami & Mexico-based rooftop performances and the floor-fiery (and downright Dreamstate smashing!) ‘Feel It’, all of which underscore CG’s “Forward Ever, Backward Never” maxim.

To ‘MOSAIIK’s first Chapter will also come a second Diana Miro-voiced lightning strike, with the mood some and more trance-slanted ‘Nothing To Hide’. There are also long overdue reteaming with Mike Schmid and Julie Thompson – singers who’ve respectively featured on CG’s ‘Start To Feel’ and ‘Materia’ albums.

Needing little by way of explanation, Mike’s ‘Summer Wonder’ is a cheer to the season at hand, while Julie’s figuratively thought-provoking ‘These Dreams’ brings ‘MOSAIIK’ cooler raptures. The album also carries Nic & Bossi’s mainstage-minded singles ‘Universal Love’ & ‘Your Mind’, as well as the less vocal-led, more progressive, but every bit as club-rubbed ‘Vertigo’.

Giving you the best of possible ideas as to what Nic & Bossi have in store, you can preview all the cuts that comprise ‘MOSAIIK Chapter One’ now, here . Across all digital formats, the album is ready to pre-save or pre-order from today (with a CD edition set to follow with ‘Chapter 2’). So you can ensure you’re amongst the very first of the first to hear one of the albums of the summer.

Roger Sanchez Celebrates 20th Anniversary of his Iconic Hit ‘Another Chance’

One of the world’s most treasured and prolific names in House music DJ Roger Sanchez celebrates 20 years of his iconic #1 single ‘Another Chance’.

Kicking off celebrations and partnering again with Sony, Roger shares an HD Remastered version of the original Philippe Andre directed video alongside news of a limited 7″ picture disc of the original track available for pre-order Friday 16th July.

From humble beginnings in New York City, digging in dusty crates of old vinyl and spinning at house parties in Corona, Queens, to dominating the dance floors and headlining festival main-stages in every corner of the globe, 2021 marks the perfect moment to both reflect on an enviable career as well as look forward with anticipation to what the future holds for this multi-talented stalwart of the scene.

Speaking on the anniversary, Roger says:

It’s incredible to think that Another Chance turns 20 this year – where has the time gone?! That song marked a major transition in my life and a broadening of my connection to the world through my music so it’s great to come full circle and once again work with Sony – the company that helped present it to the world.

This track continues to resonate with audiences on the dance floor and I’m blessed to not only have it as one of my creations, but to know that it still makes people dance and feel connected to this day.

Roger Sanchez is an artist who is always moving forward, re-defining house music – the crafting of which started in the late 80s, where as a young man he was enticed by the explosion of Hip-Hop that was taking over the city first embracing the culture as a b-boy and graffiti artist.

Releasing music under a multitude of monikers, including the S-Man, Roger S, The Nu- Solution, Underground Solution, DV8, Ego Trip, El Mariachi, The Funkjunkeez, Tribal Infusion, Twilight and Transatlantic Soul, his first 12-inch, “Dreamworld” came out on the Outer Limits imprint in 1990 under the name Egotrip, and was the turning point that shifted his focus from simply playing music to producing.

Just over 10 years later in 2001 Roger reached the pinnacle of success, scoring a chart topping number 1 record with ‘Another Chance‘, which laid the foundation for international demand and has gone on to amass over 35 million streams.

Roger hasn’t stopped since, touring the world from Glastonbury to Tulum and everywhere in between and boasting prominent residencies in Ibiza since 2000 at Space, Cream, Glitterbox, Defected, Pacha, Amnesia and more. As well as releasing a slew of original records on influential independent labels such as Strictly Rhythm, One Records, and Defected as well as across the majors over the years, he’s also being called upon to remix for a wide range of artists including Michael Jackson, The Police, Diana Ross, Jamiroquai, Maroon 5, and No Doubt, for which he won a Grammy in 2003 for Best Remixed Recording for the song “Hella Good“.

Always motivated by that innovative spirit, Roger was an early pioneer of podcasting and was awarded the first-ever Best Podcast Award at the International Dance Music Awards in 2007. He currently hosts Release Yourself, a weekly terrestrial and online radio show and podcast that features not only his own productions but also features up and coming artists. It attracts over 20 million listeners around the world and is broadcast in over thirty markets on every continent, and if that weren’t enough, he creates many of his podcasts and mixes from the road.

Whether it’s via his recent hit ‘Dream On Me‘, with Ella Henderson, his charity work or his graffiti and digital art, Roger is always finding innovative ways of connecting with his audience and pushing the boundaries of his craft.

RÜFÜS DU SOL return with new single ‘Alive’

NEW YORK, NY - JULY 24: (L-R) Tyrone Lindqvist, James Hunt and Jon George of Rufus Du Sol performs onstage at the 2016 Panorama NYC Festival - Day 3 at Randall's Island on July 24, 2016 in New York City. (Photo by Nicholas Hunt/Getty Images)

RÜFÜS DU SOL have been quiet. Quietly looking inwards, quietly crafting a new world to explore with their fans, quietly relearning what it means to be Alive…

Today the band continues its legacy as global leaders of the live-electronic movement, releasing the first new music since their Grammy-nominated 2018 ‘SOLACE‘ album.

Premiered today on The Zane Lowe Show, “Alive” is adorned with haunting lyricism and inventive broken beat percussion, encapsulating the highs and lows of a lost but not forgotten year.

RÜFÜS‘ lead singer Tyrone calls out with a sense of urgent and naked emotion, these are intensely personal lyrics for him, yet they encapsulate the feelings many of us have endured the past year:

There’s a pain in my chest that I can’t describe
It takes me down and leaves me there
When I talk to the night I can feel it’s stare
It creeps inside and meets me there…..

At least I’m alive…

Alive” is the initial taste of what the band’s reemergence sounds like; a retention of the darkness they have consistently explored, notably on ‘SOLACE,’ paired with a glistening energy aimed to uplift and uphold their dedication to wowing larger than life dance floors.

Alive” begins to sculpt the first look into a new world for the band and their fans to cohabitate, a continuation of the exploration of place that defines the way they write and perform music. From their debut album recorded on the coast of Australia, onwards to the brooding ‘BLOOM‘ written in the streets of techno mecca Berlin, to ‘SOLACE‘s glimpse of the darker side of Los Angeles, the trio now push outwards, less bound by Geographical location, to the wider reaches of space and time.

In Tyrone Lindqvist of the band’s own words, “It’s a heavier song in some ways, but at its core it’s hopeful. We are – all of us – living in this transitional moment right now and we wanted to focus on the hope that the future holds for us all. To focus on the light at the end of this tunnel.

This announcement comes alongside the reveal of the band’s North American Fall Tour, touching down at Las Vegas’ Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, Phoenix’s Arizona Federal Theatre, Dallas’ The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory and a to-be-announced venue in Houston.

RÜFÜS have already experienced an immense demand for their live return, selling 70,000 tickets in three days for their largest headlining shows to date at Los Angeles Banc of California Stadium. The on sale was a true barometer for just how deeply fans crave the sonic escapism RÜFÜS work to deliver at every show. This banner moment joins two sold out nights at Red Rocks Amphitheater in August, and a bevy of headlining festival appearances already announced including Governors Ball, Austin City Limits, III Points and more. General tickets go on sale July 16th at 10am local time in each market – purchase tickets HERE.

Alive,” out now on Rose Avenue and Reprise / Warner Records, is a transcendent take from a group that have built a career on defying expectations – listen HERE.
