UNUM Festival returns for 2021

Unum Festival is to return to the gorgeous beaches and pine forests of Shenghin on the Albanian Riviera from June 3rd to 7th 2021.

After careful discussions with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, and the Ministry of Health, all necessary measures will be undertaken to ensure that rapid tests will be offered at the open air festival venue so that you can enjoy world class music in a stunning, sun kissed setting next summer. This makes Albania the first country in the world to approve of testing for social and cultural events.

The advancing technology and accuracy of rapid tests currently allows for results within 10-15 minutes, which is all that would be required to ensure you can enjoy the festival in the way it should be enjoyed. On top of that, vaccines will likely have arrived early next year so that plans for this small, perfectly formed festival are now well underway, all with the support and backing of the Albanian government.

UNUM Festival 2021

In 2019, the close-knit UNUM was a brand new festival that made an immediate mark in its first year because it was a friendly coming together of real music lovers in an amazing region of the world. It played out on the beautiful, organic and natural Albanian Riviera with a world class line-up of house, minimal and techno DJs such as Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Butch, Margaret Dygas, Petre Inspirescu, Praslea, Sonja Moonear, Zip and more. Expect more of these cult underground selectors when the full line up is announced soon.

The festival really shined a spotlight on Rana e Hedhun, the last untapped corner of Europe in the town of Shengjin, on the idyllic Albanian coastline. Music played, and will play again, across day and night, with blissful sunrise and sunset parties, water sports, plenty of local culture, food and drink offerings and a music loving crowd from all corners of the world. Beyond the music there is lots to explore in this natural paradise, from isolated bays and gold sand beaches to the Albanian Alps.

Until next June, take care of yourself, family, and friends and save your energy for what will be some seriously good vibes for Unum 2021.

Richie Hawtin releases his first dance-floor oriented EP ‘Time Warps’

Legendary Techno DJ and producer, Richie Hawtin releases ‘Time Warps’, his first dancefloor focused EP since ‘Minus Orange’ in 1999. This is the first release on a new extension of Hawtin’s iconic Plus 8 label, From Our Minds (FOM1).

Few can match Richie Hawtin’s contribution to techno over the last three decades. A restless pioneer, the Canadian artist’s importance as a producer, which includes music made under aliases like Plastikman and F.U.S.E, is matched by his influence as a curator for iconic labels like M_nus, Plus 8 and Probe.

Now, through a pair of brand new, long-form club tracks, recorded in lockdown and boasting a combined length of over 30 minutes, ‘Time Warps’ channels the blurred, stretched perception of time that has been so characteristic of life in 2020.

With constantly evolving, precision engineered loops delivered at a pulse-raising tempo, patient pacing and a seamless yet unpredictable progression, the title track is a lesson in building the kind of mesmeric dancefloor moments synonymous with the producer’s name.

The alternative mix ‘Time Stands Still’ takes a radically different approach, with stretches of ominous ambience that manage to slowly dial up rather than suppress the tension, deferring release until the perfect moment. A statement of intent on a new imprint, and a long-awaited return.

Hawtin and long-time collaborator Barbara Klein worked together to create a full-length video portrait to capture the atmosphere and feelings of the main track ‘Time Warps’.

The vinyl edition coming out 1 week later is manufactured by Deepgrooves Vinyl Pressing Plant using recycled vinyl, 100% recycled 250gsm cardboard with plant based inks.

Here’s what Richie Hawtin had to say:

“After thirty years in the music industry and with the state of the planet, I believe we need to consider the environmental impact of petroleum based music formats. I’m still committed to releasing a limited edition vinyl for those who choose to enjoy their music using this format, however, I believe that our community needs to be more sensitive with their vinyl strategy.

Going forward we need to consider all aspects of our physical releases, including packaging, using recycled products and working together with manufacturers who take this subject seriously.”

Wankelmut releases ‘Sunset’ with Kygo collaborator Andrew Jackson

Wankelmut

Berlin-based musician Wankelmut is back on the release radar with ‘Sunset’, the multifaceted DJ/producer’s highly-anticipated eighth original production of the new decade featuring harmonious vocals from Los Angeles-based, London native Andrew Jackson.

The latest to come from the dynamically innovative trailblazer directly follows he and German singer/songwriter Anna Leyne’s collaborative late October-released Toolroom single ‘Free At Last’. Out now on Universal Music, ‘Sunset’ is available to stream across all platforms.

The nearly three-minute musical endeavor immediately kicks off with brooding, larger-than-life soundscapes alongside a pitched-down, textured vocal cut courtesy of L.A.-based talent Andrew Jackson. Infectiously propulsive basslines quickly enter the space, accompanied by a catchy, four-on-the-floor beat.

The propelling rhythm carries the upbeat track’s high-octane energy throughout its entirety, leaving the listener with a want for even more sonic magic from both Wankelmut and Jackson by its end.

Jacob Dilssner, known as Wanklemut, is a well-established, Beatport chart-topping German creative force who’s been actively releasing his own unique signature brand of electronic dance music for well over seven years.

His highly-successful Gold and Platinum-awarded remix of Israeli musician Asaf Avidan’s ‘One Day / Reckoning Song’ marked his first foray into the scene in the summer of 2012. The following year, the release of he and Australian singer/songwriter Emma Louise’s collaborative track ‘My Head is a Jungle’ marked another pivotal point for the artist, hitting the Top 20 charts all over Europe, as well as receiving a 2014 remix from Detroit house legend MK.

Over time, Dilssner’s impressively cultivated a mass following with releases on venerated labels such as Britain’s Defected Records, Mark Knight’s Toolroom Records, Above & Beyond’s Anjunadeep, and Ultra Records, to name a few. He also boasts 1.9 million monthly listeners that tune in each month to his music via Spotify, in addition to a monthly radio program via Germany’s largest station, WDR 1Live, that’s been broadcasting for nearly four years.

My new single ‘Sunset’ marks my first-ever collaboration with the great singer Andrew Jackson. When I first heard his voice it was obvious to me that we must collaborate. In the end, we got a serious house music banger with all aspects of a big tune for 2021’ – Wankelmut

Andrew Jackson is a budding British singer/songwriter who’s worked with plenty of talented musicians over the years. His collaboration with Kygo for their 2017 hit track ‘Cruise’ was a milestone for the musician and was featured in the soundtrack for the movie Fifty Shades Darker.

In all, ‘Sunset’ is a true gem of a track, and serves as another exhilarating addition to Wankelmut’s back-catalog.

Carl Cox’s single ‘Pure’ gets remixed by Reinier Zonneveld, Brennen Grey & Collective States

Carl Cox

Legendary DJ and producer, Carl Cox is taking another step on his PURE journey with a mesmerizing remix package featuring some of techno’s top underground talents.

Carl‘s original version of PURE was an absolute beast of a tune that never failed to ignite any crowd. Released in March of 2020, and being the first release Carl had put out in over two years, he had this to say about it at the time:

It’s a real thrill to see the crowd reaction when I drop PURE into the mix. The thing about this one is that it grabs hold with a million techno-tentacles and won’t let go! Even I can’t resist when it comes on!

Always a champion of the underground, Carl chose three rising talents to provide their unique take on what has already become a techno classic.

Reinier Zonneveld starts the show with a punishing beat that grabs the listener from the first count and continues to build a relentless path toward techno bliss. Peak hour techno right here.

Brennen Grey follows suit with an equally mesmerizing mix that infuses the PURE story with some old-school analog giving rise to longing memories of dusty days on the Playa.

The trifecta mix in the package is provided by Collective States, who unwind the track into its most minimalistic form, ebbing and flowing with a sonic purity that has become his signature sound. This is a track that begs to be played at any sunrise.

He has also been keeping busy in the studio, producing his own music as well as mixing and engineering for Banks, Classixx, Rufus, Miami Horror and Bag Raiders.

One of the most recognisable figures from the world of dance music, Loco Dice has been releasing music since 2002, launching the Desolat imprint five years later. As well as performing at some of the world’s finest clubs and festivals, the Dusseldorf-born artist has also been busy launching his new En Couleur label, where he released music from artists including Detroit legend Eddie Fowlkes.

The ‘Paradise‘ remix package sees two generations of dance music talent inject their own infectious energy into the production process.

Solomun returns with new single ‘Kreatur der Nacht’ featuring Isolation Berlin

Solomun

Superstar DJ and producer, Solomun returns with new single ‘Kreatur der Nacht’, featuring German indie-rock outfit Isolation Berlin, out 27th November.

As a child of the 80s I had wanted to make a track with this special feeling for a long time, one which is playing with the punk and new wave appeal of that time,Solomun explains. “So I was very happy that the band Isolation Berlin and I got together last year and the track ‘Kreatur der Nacht’ was born.

Capturing the essence of the cold wave and post-punk sound that dominated mainland Europe throughout the 80s, ‘Kreatur der Nacht‘ combines pounding snares, a cold, metallic bassline and Isolation Berlin‘s aggressive vocals.

The industrial aesthetic is further accentuated by the accompanying official video, shot by Golden Globe-winning director and producer Fatih Akin (Aus dem Nichts, 2017), depicting the protagonist walking into a leather-clad punk crowd while the track plays.

Discussing the music video Faith Akin mentions:

Mladen (Solomun) mixes his signature contemporary Sound with the New Wave of the early 80s, that also shaped me. Artifacts of this culture repeatedly appear in my work.” He adds: “That’s why it was a huge gift for me to be able to have a go at this epic track, visually and narratively. It is the Solomun just the way I love and cherish him, who gave me the chance to personally express myself here.

Kreatur der Nacht‘ marks the second release on his freshly launched NINL imprint, following on from last month’s ‘Home‘, with both tracks set to feature on his forthcoming album – his first in eleven years – set for release in May 2021.

Born in Bosnia and raised in Hamburg, Solomun has established himself as one of the finest electronic artists on the planet in recent years, winning the DJ Awards accolade for ‘Best International DJ’ multiple times and remixing countless high-profile acts, including Foals, Editors, Lana Del Rey, Paul Kalkbrenner, Jamiroquai, Depeche Mode, Apparat, Jon Hopkins and Leonard Cohen.

Formed in 2012, Isolation Berlin first began turning heads with their debut album ‘Aus den Wolken tropft die Zeit‘ an acclaimed release that was named eighth best German album of the year by music magazine Musikexpress. They have since released one more LP – ‘Vergifte Dich‘ and a string of EPs, singles and collaborations. Isolation Berlin currently work on a new record which is set to be released in 2021.

Kreatur der Nacht‘ sees Solomun channel the sound of his youth into something remarkably fresh and invigorating.
