Exclusive Interview with Simon Fraser, the label manager at Play Records

Play Records has been a leading electronic music label and publisher for over two decades, and as they move into 2023, they show no signs of slowing down. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Simon Fraser, the label manager at Play Records, to discuss their plans and projects for the upcoming year.

In our interview, we talked about everything from new releases and resolutions to new signings and milestones they hope to achieve as a label. Fraser gave us an inside look at what’s in store for Play Records in 2023 and beyond, and we were impressed by the level of dedication and creativity that the label continues to bring to the electronic music industry.

If you’re a fan of Play Records, or just curious about what the label has in store for the future, be sure to read on and find out what Simon Fraser had to say about their exciting plans for the coming year.

Hi Simon, how are you?

I have not slipped on any ice and fallen this Winter. When Canadians reach a certain age, this is how we judge our lives. So, I’m doing great, thanks for asking.

2023 is here and we’d like to know more about your plans and upcoming projects, can you tell us do you have any new releases coming up?

We’ve got our regular collections coinciding with Miami Music Week, International Music Summit in Ibiza, and ADE in Amsterdam.

Melleefresh has two albums coming out this year – 150BPM Workout, a collection of her most popular tracks ramped up to 150bpm for working out to, is releasing in May and Under The Covers, a collection of cover songs, is releasing in September.

We’re running remix contests for the next 3 months on Beatport’s LabelRadar, for a remix album of Kardano’s Art of Tones, to be released in late June.

And we’ve got a bunch of single releases between these bigger releases, from Hotboxx, Emanuele Marini, Roberto Cavicchioni, KuntyBeatz, Sheps, Ripe Raza, and Hectic.

Are there any new signings or are you looking for new artists to join the roster?

If the history of Play Records tells me anything, it’s that we’re a label that many artists get their start at, or at least work with early in their careers. So, there will undoubtedly be new artists on the roster. We usually see an uptick in demo submissions during the Summer, so ask me again in a few months.

Are there any other projects the label is embarking upon this year?

We’ve seen a big increase in the number of artists who want to release EPs on Play, so we’ll likely be releasing more EPs this year than we normally would, which is great.

I much prefer releases with multiple tracks rather than singles. In some ways, because of DIY services, the music industry has become much more of a numbers game. (The more tracks on a release, the more plays the release is likely to generate from the artist’s audience.)

EPs strike a nice balance between that numbers game and the amount of labour and heart it takes for an artist to generate their works and for a label to release them.

Are there new implementations to your workflow or your strategies that you’d like to try this year?

Melleefresh is about to launch a second DJ mix show. Melleefresh House Party will run on a weekly schedule rather than bi-monthly like her first show – Melleefresh Radio – does.

Late last year, we started to incorporate elements of AI artwork in our album art. The first draft of the artwork on Parker McFarland’s Say Something was generated in Dall-E2 in around 20 prompts, then completed after a few hours of correcting all the errors made by the AI engine. We’ve found that generative AI is far more effective at producing manipulable design elements rather than completed designs, though there have been a few instances of getting it right with a single prompt.

Are there any new resolutions the label made for this year?

I have around 40 boxes of deadmau5 at Play CDs on a shelf in front of me that I would love to clear out by the end of the year.

What new milestones would you like to achieve in 2023?

I’d like to create a knowledge base for our artists. Prior to working at Play, I was heavily into DIY web development and content management for 20 years, so I know the nuts & bolts of how platforms work and what data/data-types are used by search engines to generate their search results. There are lots of tricks and tips that I’ve shared with artists over the years. But I’ve yet to centralize those lessons in one location. So that’s on my to-do list.

What new milestones would you like your artists to achieve?

I’d like them to learn to better use SoundCloud. Even with a free basic account, it’s a very powerful branding platform and 99% of artists who use it only scratch the surface of its capabilities. Even many top-tier artists who are on SoundCloud don’t employ the best practices they should.

What’s the most important thing you’re looking forward to this year?

Having not slipped on ice and fallen down.

As Play Records moves into its third decade as a leading Electronic music label and publisher, it’s clear that they’re still pushing the boundaries of the industry. Our conversation with Simon Fraser, the label manager at Play Records, gave us a glimpse into their plans and projects for 2023, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s in store.

From new releases to remix contests and a focus on empowering their artists with knowledge, it’s clear that Play Records is dedicated to bringing the best in Electronic music to fans around the world. We look forward to seeing what they’ll achieve in the years to come.

Interview with DJ & Producer ALEX LNDN to discuss the creative process behind “Phantom”

ALEX LNDN is a rising star in the electronic music scene, known for his unique sound and powerful productions. His latest track, “Phantom,” has been making waves in the Future Rave genre, earning praise from fans and critics alike.

As a young and talented DJ and music producer, we had the opportunity to sit down with ALEX LNDN to discuss the creative process behind “Phantom.” In this interview, he shares his inspirations, techniques, and challenges he faced while producing the track.

Join us as we explore the world of ALEX LNDN and learn about the making of “Phantom.”

Hi ALEX LNDN! How are you doing?

Hi, I am doing great, thank you.

“Phantom” is out now, can you tell us what inspired you to produce this track?

I wanted to produce something that was different from what is being released in Future Rave. My goal was to play around with ambient sounds in the breakdown (I love the sound selection from my favorite composer Ólafur Arnalds). I then drew some inspiration from Daft Punk in the breakdown with a sound-designed lead and thought it brought something interesting.

Does the song have any specific musical or sonic influences?

The influences would be from Ólafur Arnalds as he does an amazing job blending acoustic and electronic sounds together, and that Daft Punk lead sound from the breakdown too. Of course, if I must trace back to the origin of this record, it has obvious references from David Guetta & MORTEN’s sounds.

What’s your favorite element of the track?

I would say the lead sound and melody. It brings a new melodic pattern to the Future Rave genre.

How long did it take you to finish the production?

It has an interesting story. Technically, it took me just a few weeks back in November. However, the record itself took more than a year to be released. The track has been sitting in my folders, and I was unsure if it would fit some labels as some people advised me to change the melody pattern.

I decided in the end to stick with my vision, and it found a beautiful home in Sweden at Future Rave Music. As of now, “Phantom” has been supported by David Guetta, Spinnin’ Records, and Revealed Recordings, among others, and has been climbing up the charts on Beatport. So, in the end, I’m happy to have stuck with my thoughts and still decided to keep the melody pattern in place.

Did you have to overcome any struggles while working on the song?

Everything came together really smoothly in the making of this track, so I would not say I struggled at all.

How does this song compare or differ from your previous releases?

All my releases are different, with varying melodic patterns, breakdowns, etc. So, I would consider this one to be unique on pretty much every level. But I would say that the lead pattern is something special, and the vocal atmosphere sets this one apart from my previous records.

How would you describe “Phantom” to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?

“Phantom” is an energetic and melodic track that blends uplifting vocal pads and soothing atmospheres to take the listening experience to a new level.

And how would you like people to feel when they listen to the song?

I would love to see people smile, dance, and rave about this record. I want listeners to feel at home when listening to it, just as I found a safe place in this one.

What’s coming next for ALEX LNDN?

I can’t say much, but I promise more tracks coming up on MDLBEAST Records this year, some great collaborations, as well as potentially finding me on major European labels too within these next few months. I’m hoping to tour Europe and beyond and can’t wait to see you all there!

We want to thank ALEX LNDN for taking the time to speak with us today and for sharing his insights into the creative process behind “Phantom“. It’s been a pleasure to learn more about his musical influences and his passion for producing innovative Future Rave tracks.

We look forward to hearing more from him in the future and wish him all the best in his upcoming projects and live shows.

Exclusive Interview with the rising star in the Electronic Dance music scene, Apollo Xo

Apollo Xo is a rising star in the Electronic Dance music scene, known for his genre-bending sound and electrifying live performances.

In this interview, we had the opportunity to chat with Apollo Xo about his beginnings as a DJ, his experiences behind the decks, and what he does to prepare for his live shows. We also talked about some of his most memorable moments while performing live, and how he continues to evolve and grow as an artist.

Whether you’re a fan of Electronic music or just curious about the creative process and performance aspects of being a DJ, our conversation with Apollo Xo offers insights and inspiration from an up-and-coming artist who’s making waves in the EDM scene with his genre-bending sound and electrifying live performances.

Check out the full interview below!

Hey Apollo Xo! How are you?

I’m great thanks for asking. Just been working on new tunes and finding inspiration through different mediums.

Do you remember your first live performance ever? Where was it and how did it go?

Yeah, I definitely remember my first gig like it was yesterday. Haha! I had just decided I wanted to become a DJ, and my sister at the time worked at a hole in the wall biker bar. I played my first DJ set ever on their outdoor patio.

I definitely was not prepared for it, they wanted music along the lines of ACDC and Metallica, and at the time, I was making hip hop beats, still brand new to DJ’ing, so I definitely did not have any of that. My first gigs after that though were my high school dance. I would consider those more of where I really was able to DJ and do what I wanted as a DJ at the time.

What’s your usual routine to get ready for a live show?

I don’t really have a steady routine because if I’m playing a big show, I’ve probably spent a few days prepping and getting tunes ready. But mostly, on the day of the show, I’ll search for any last-minute heat and edits I want to make, and then triple check to make sure I have everything I wanted to play.

What elements do you look for in a track to add it to a live set?

It has to move me immediately when I start listening to it. I really tend to lean more towards heavy percussive/rhythmic bass and drums. The drop has to immediately grab me as well. Usually, when I’m searching for new music, I’ll go straight to the drop of the song. If it doesn’t immediately make me say, “yeah, this is heat,” it gets skipped. If I do like elements on the drop, then I’ll go back and listen to the breakdowns and other parts of it.

What’s your favorite thing about mixing live?

Connecting with the audience and watching them have a great time to the tunes I’m playing and things I’ve made. It’s an unmatched feeling dropping a tune you’ve made and watching it light up a crowd.

How important it is to know how to read the audience and how did you learn to do it?

It’s honestly the most important piece in DJing. You can be terrible technically but have A1 song selection and still get the audience on your side. But on the flip side, if you have amazing technical ability and terrible song selection, you’re going to lose the crowd. I see this a lot in battle DJs and DJs who come from honing their skills in their bedrooms. They put a huge emphasis on technical ability and not enough on learning how to read a crowd.

I learned by going with DJs older and more experienced than myself to their parties and events and just watching how crowds reacted to what they were doing. Then going and trying to implement certain things in my set in my way.

Can you tell us what would you say it’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your time performing live?

Take risks. And put people onto new music they haven’t heard. Everybody has heard tracks from the Beatport Top 100, but what about that bedroom producer who just put out a fire record that has less than 1k plays? Those are the records that people appreciate your art form for.

What’s the funniest or most exciting story you have involving a live show?

Man, this is funny and nerve wrecking at the same time. I rode my Harley to Indianapolis for a show one day which is about a 4-hour ride and I didn’t bring my laptop since I took the motorcycle, I only brought my USBs. When I got to my hotel in Indiana, I realized I didn’t have my USB’s. Luckily by chance I had just backed up my entire library to my Rekordbox cloud library and was able to use the opening DJ’s laptop to download my playlist for the night. Lesson learned. Always bring the laptop, haha.

Thank you for sharing that story, Apollo Xo! It’s definitely a lesson to always be prepared. Speaking of incorporating new things, Which new skills or gear would you like to incorporate in the near future?

I’d like to incorporate more live performance aspects. I play a couple instruments, so in sets when I’m playing more of my original music, I’d like to do that.

What piece of advice would you give to a DJ that’s starting to perform live?

Go see other DJ’s. Popular and non-popular that will help you grasp your job as a live performing DJ more. The do’s and don’ts of DJ sets.

It was great to speak with Apollo Xo and gain insight into his beginnings as a DJ, his experience behind the decks, and learn more about how he prepares for live shows.

From his first gig at a biker bar to his high school dances, Apollo’s early experiences shaped his career and influenced his style. As a seasoned DJ, he has learned the importance of reading the crowd, taking risks, and introducing audiences to new music. We look forward to seeing Apollo incorporate more live performance aspects into his sets and continue to impress with his innovative approach to music.
