Oliver Heldens reworks Kate Ryan’s classic ‘Désenchantée’

Oliver Heldens

The track has a long history, originally released by Mylène Farmer way back in 1991, and has been an enduring hit in the dancefloors of Europe in its various forms ever since. Kate’s 2002 version is the best-known version, and still gets played on a wide range of dancefloors. Now Heldens reworks it in pumping ‘EuroRave’ style to bring it right up to date.

With one foot in the Eurodance vibes of Ryan‘s version with its ravey synths arpeggios and one in the present with the thumping kicks and pacey tempo a nod to his HI-LO alter ego, he has breathed even more life into this monster track. Injecting it with new vigour and energy, it’s guaranteed to be a massive fixture at festivals all summer long and will introduce this classic to a new generation to help it live on further.

“After the pandemic, I’ve been cranking up the tempo sometimes at the end of my sets, and in the summer of 2021 when I was closing a festival in France I remember at the end of my set, I wished I had a good remix or edit of the French vocal (Euro)Trance classic ‘Désenchantée’ cause that would’ve been perfect.

So after I decided I’ll make one myself for future shows in France, Belgium and the French part of Canada where I perform regularly. I made a pretty simple edit at first muting the very low frequencies of the original and adding a big warehousy techno kickdrum instead, and that worked fantastic already at a few of these shows in France, Canada and in the Netherlands in 2022, as well as getting some good traction online.

So after the 2022 summer I went back into the studio and worked more on it, adding a few more elements like this happy hardcore binary voice synth arpeggio and some more percussion and fx to get it over the finish line.

It’s been super fun to play this remix at the end of my sets, I’ve actually been working on a couple more tracks and remixes that are in a similar direction and I like to call this ‘EuroRave’, cause it’s not EuroTrance or Trance anymore, but it’s also not Hyper Techno or Techno. I hope you like it!”, says Oliver Heldens.

“While I’ve been approached by many people in the past for a remix of my classic, nothing was ever good enough, and definitely not better than my original” says Ryan, who has been one of Europe’s biggest pop successes since the early 2000s.

“That was until I stumbled upon a post on Instagram of Oliver Heldens playing a bootleg remix of my track. I reached out to let him know that I loved it, and we soon connected to discuss the possibility of working together on a reimagined version of it. We are confident that the remix will become a hit and continue the legacy of this dance classic for years to come. I’m thrilled to have worked with Oliver on this project, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear this new version.”

Heldens has been keeping busy as usual, and will be hosting his infamous Heldeep Poolparty during Miami Music Week and playing two sets at Ultra Miami later this month. Recent singles ‘Disco Voyager‘ and ‘Oops‘ have both proved to be staples of the scene, gaining support from a huge range of DJs across the board.

Kate Ryan is gearing up for The Ultimate Seduction Tour 2023, which promises to be a truly unforgettable experience, with cutting-edge production backed by a tight live band and propelled by a fierce light show.

Get prepared for ‘Désenchantée‘ to dominate the summer season!

Combining melodic, progressive and deep house elements, Indulgence floats across a pristine arrangement with gentle instrumentals and alluring samples, contrasted by a dramatic synth lead.

Encapsulating her sonic identity and the essence of her performances, Indulgence is a quintessential track that has already captivated audiences in her sets around the planet, showcasing her unique craft that seamlessly connects club culture with classical sounds.

While this may be her first release of the year, it is by no means the beginning of 2023 for Nora En Pure. Hitting the ground running in the first few months, Nora En Pure’s tour schedule saw her play shows across North America, including CRSSD’s Proper NYE / NYD event, RosaNegra Beach in Tulum, Big City Live in Boston, Space Miami, Igloofest in Montreal, and Musica NYC, to name a few.

ANYMA & Cassian deliver highly anticipated remix of Jimi Jules’ track ‘My City’s On Fire’

Anyma

Grammy award-winning artist Cassian, and ANYMA of the acclaimed melodic-techno duo Tale Of Us have joined forces to deliver an electrifying remix of Jimi Jules’ hit single “My City’s On Fire”, released on Rose Avenue Records, founded by RÜFÜS DU SOL.

One of 2022’s biggest dance records originally released on Innervisions and executive produced by Dixon, ANYMA and Cassian‘s remix is a dynamic and powerful track that combines driving percussion, distorted vocal samples, and a pulsing bassline, while also incorporating subtle melodic elements that add depth and complexity to the overall composition.

The collaboration showcases the unmatched chemistry between the two artists, with a sound that is distinct enough to identify them individually, yet cohesive enough to create an unprecedented dynamic.

Despite ANYMA and Cassian‘s busy touring schedules in 2022, the two found the time to come together for this highly anticipated remix, which both artists have played at recent shows around the world. A natural collaboration, ANYMA and Cassian have been fans of one another’s work, with ANYMA being a fan of Cassian‘s mix engineering work, original productions, and playing his 2022 single ‘React‘ in many of his sets.

“This remix began life almost one year ago on the day that Anyma & I first met. After a quick hello we immediately began to work”, said Cassian about the release.

“We quickly created an instrumental track that we both liked but it wasn’t until a few weeks later that we were sent the vocal for ‘My City’s On Fire’. Anyma realized it would fit perfectly with the track we had already made and we put together the remix right away. From the moment I started playing it at shows it quickly became my most requested song and I’m so excited for its release on Rose Avenue”, he added.

ANYMA is the multi-disciplinary music & contemporary fine art project created by Tale Of Us founding member Matteo Milleri, whose music and visual art has been causing a stir across the music world. ANYMA is at once a music and art pursuit, the two mediums existing as one; be it at an art exhibition or at a live performance. First coded by Milleri with collaborator Alessio De Vecchi during the 2020 lockdown, the identity of ANYMA is strictly bound with the music – to the extent that the music is often changed to fit the visual, and vice versa.

ANYMA has been releasing pivotal EPs, beginning with the ‘Sentient‘ EP on Afterlife, followed by ‘Claire‘ on Rose Avenue and a now the much anticipated ‘Running‘, featuring Meg Myers performance on Kate Bush‘s lyrics. His immersive live performances have captivated audiences from Tulum & New York to Ibiza, mesmerizing the audience with mind blowing visuals.

Cassian, a triple threat as a mixer, producer, and DJ, is considered a singular force in the melodic house and techno realms, with an extensive list of studio credits. In 2022, Cassian scored his first Grammy Award for mixing RÜFÜS DU SOL‘s single, ‘Alive‘ from their fourth studio album, ‘Surrender‘.

Cassian‘s critically acclaimed debut LP, ‘LAPS‘, arrived in 2020, followed by a post lockdown 2 track club ready EP ‘Reactivate‘, and making his debut on Tale Of Us‘s Afterlife with ‘Landa‘ in 2022. Cassian‘s high-profile performances have put him center stage at revered venues such as Red Rocks, The Brooklyn Mirage, The Concourse Project, and major festivals including Electric Forest and LIfe Is Beautiful – with his debut set for Coachella’s Yuma Stage in 2023. Cassian’s soundscape construction and versatility have earned him a loyal following, with more than a million captivated monthly listeners across various platforms.

ANYMA & Cassian‘s remix of ‘My City’s On Fire‘ boasts emotive harmonies, atmospheric textures, and entrancing beats that evoke a sense of euphoric introspection, demonstrating the remarkable artistry and skill of these talented producers.

Damian Lazarus Announces Crosstown Rebels 20th Anniversary World Tour

© Photography by Jack Pasco for Here & Now (fb.com/wearehereandnow)

Twenty years ago, Damian Lazarus‘ Crosstown Rebels label originated as a home for electronic music misfits from around the world, a family of outrageous characters, and enclave for the avantgarde that went on to become one of clubland’s most influential entities.

In celebration of the label’s 20th anniversary, Lazarus has now announced the CR20 Tour, bringing Crosstown veteran artists and newcomers alike to ten of the best party cities around the world, paying homage to the label’s two decade history at the outer edges of the dancefloor.

The CR20 tour will touch down in ten cities at iconic nightlife institutions including London’s Fabric, Rome’s Sanctuary, Berlin’s Watergate, Paris’s Bridge, Istanbul’s Klein Phonix, Ibiza’s Akasha, Tokyo’s Zero Tokyo, and Bali’s Savaya. The tour sees Lazarus curate a multi-generational Crosstown affair including Detroit champion Seth Troxler, underground staple Dennis Cruz, multi-instrumentalist production icon Mathew Jonson, London’s own Made By Pete, the mystifying Oceanvs Orientalis and more.

On par with Lazarus‘ propensity to support rising talent, he has also invited amapiano flag bearer AMÉMÉ, Berlin-based minimal icon Yulia Niko, Crosstown kin Tibi Dabo, alternative electronic duo Pale Blue, and Paris’s Salome Lé Chat.

Opening the Crosstown 20 tour, Get Lost Miami will feature 90+ artists soundtracking a 24-hour long mad circus experience, bridging sonic worlds from Carl Craig to Major Lazer, DJ Holographic to A-Trak, DJ Harvey to LP Giobbi. Get Lost has been called ‘one of the best parties in the world’ by The Guardian and remains the antithesis to the increasingly commercial Miami Music Week program, pushing each and every performer into left of center tendencies.

In Lazarus‘ own words, “20 years ago I dreamed a dream of creating a family of like minded, crazy individuals from all corners of the planet – releasing music to the world and making people dance. That dream was Crosstown Rebels and this year we are 20.

Over these years I have forged beautiful friendships, discovered very talented artists and tried my best to help, advise and support some of the most colourful characters in dance music. Crosstown Rebels is more than a record label, it is Family.

So 2023 will mark the label’s 20th anniversary. This is an opportunity for the Crosstown Rebels family, a global community of artists, DJs and creatives, and the label’s myriad of followers to celebrate this momentous milestone. With support from our friends at @volcantequila, there will be parties and events around the world.

There’s a killer compilation of exclusives and special remixes in the works. There’s also a beautiful coffee table book, a short film, and a special launch event planned to bring together the sights and sounds of the label’s unique and influential history. There’s lots to share, announce and reminisce about in the coming weeks”.

Since its formation in 2003, Crosstown Rebels has remained on the forefront of discovering emerging sounds and debuting breakthrough artists, helping launch the careers of global superstars like Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Maceo Plex, and Art Department in the early years of the imprint and positioning itself as one of contemporary house and techno’s most forward-thinking labels. Crosstown has remained a broad force across the world of electronic since those early days, uniting artists like DJ Krust, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Four Tet, Masters at Work, Satori, Jennifer Cardini and many more under one roof.

The labe’s 20 year history has been adorned with massive hits like Andre Krami‘s ‘Safari,’ Guti & Dubshape‘s ‘Every Cow Had A Bird,’ Art Department‘s ‘Without You,’ and Chic Minature‘s ‘Escandalo‘ and seminal albums from Maceo Plex‘s ‘Life Index‘ to Jamie Jones‘, ‘Don’t You Remember The Future‘, Krust‘s ‘The Edge Of Everything‘ and Lazarus‘ own recent full length effort ‘Flourish‘.

Parties have always been central to Crosstown Rebels‘ identity, with the ahead of its time Rebel Rave series and early Slash & Burn parties paving the way for Lazarus to create two of the world’s most immersive sonic experiences, the internationally touring Get Lost and Day Zero in Tulum and Israel, setting precedent for electronic music events worldwide.

For the last twenty years, Crosstown Rebels have guided a global community of electronic music fans through a realm of sonic exploration and connectedness. Join the historic anniversary celebrations to experience its mystifying musical curation and storied community firsthand.

Richie Hawtin’s ‘From Our Minds’ North American Tour to partner with Aslice platform

Foundational electronic music artist Richie Hawtin announced that his ‘From Our Minds – To Be Announced Tour’ has partnered with Aslice, a recently launched service that allows performing DJs to share their fees with the artists who create the music they play in their sets. Hawtin’s tour is the first in which the entire roster and every date will utilize Aslice.

The partnership is the next evolutionary step in Richie‘s lifelong commitment supporting the development of the electronic music scene and his campaign to use technology to create greater equality across all sectors of the industry.

Aslice is a community-driven service dedicated to creating a fairer music ecosystem that helps close the gap between DJs and producers’ incomes. Aslice facilitates easy and accurate reporting, and empowers DJs to share earnings with producers directly by donating a portion of their live income, which Aslice distributes to producers played in the set.

With the potential to pay an estimated $55 Million annually to music producers, Aslice‘s vision moves a step beyond the current performance rights collections model. Aslice was founded in 2021 by American DJ and producer Zak Khutoretsky (aka Berghain resident DVS1), and has already been described as a “game-changer in the electronic music world that tries to fix the broken system of collection societies.”

“While Aslice is almost one year into public beta, we’re incredibly proud of how many DJs are already using Aslice to share some of their gig earnings with producers – many of them receiving their first payments from music in their life

. The joint effort with the From Our Minds tour is another first; with all of the DJs agreeing to share via Aslice, we’re able to capture an entire tour of playlist data; 8 clubs in major markets, over 50 hours total, from 11 different DJs with an unparalleled accuracy of over 99%.

This collaboration is not only the blueprint for how communities can look after their own, but also the proof of how Aslice’s technology can be a novel data source for publishers and collections societies to get playlist info that was previously unavailable.” Ethan Holben, Aslice CEO

“Respect to Richie Hawtin and the From Our Minds tour for partnering with Aslice to showcase the power of full community support. The data built during this tour will demonstrate the positive impact achievable when everyone contributes fairly to our music ecosystem.”  – DVS1, Aslice Founder

The ‘From Our Minds – To Be Announced Tour’ evolves from Hawtin’s CNTRL tours in 2012 & 2015, when, as EDM was booming across the US, Hawtin toured American college cities by bus, giving a series of performances, lectures and workshops, aimed at educating a new generation of electronic music enthusiasts on the sound and origins of techno music.

Today, as techno becomes increasingly popular and commercialized, Hawtin, is once again seeking to provide context and nurture the underground, playing intimate warehouse shows with independent promoters, while highlighting a new generation of artists and celebrating the collaborative and cross-generational nature of techno.

Across the tour, all venue locations will be provided to ticket buyers the day of the show. ‘From Our Minds‘ is working with independent local promoters who are aware and respectful of the history of techno music, and its future with sustainability in the programming, planning and execution of their events.

Exclusive Interview with Romanian DJ and Producer Sean Norvis

Romanian DJ and music producer Sean Norvis is set to reach new heights with his unmissable style and unique sound that has already put his name high on the list of Electronic music artists to follow.

Having tracks released through labels like Armada, Blanco y Negro and Black Hole Recordings, this DJ shows no signs of slowing down, working with his own label Norvis Music Group to unleash new bangers that earn him new accolades and conquer dancefloors all over the world.

Check out the full interview below!

Hi Sean Norvis, how are you?

I am good and I glad to meet you!

Can you tell us more about yourself? where are you from, what do you do?

I am from Romania, Timisoara, where I work as a music producer and DJ. During the week, I’m busy in the studio, crafting beats and melodies, but on the weekends, I take my music to the clubs and private parties, where I premiere the tunes. It’s a great life. In 2015, I started working on a new project, my record label, Norvis Music Group. It was a big challenge, but everything that I did it was with pleasure.

Today, I’m proud to say that it’s grown to five sub-labels, where we release and produce various musical genres for myself and other artists. It’s been a wild ride, but I’m just getting started.

How were you first introduced to music? How did you know this is what you wanted to do?

When I was a kid I was introduced to music, but I didn’t really pay much attention to it, because most of the music that was around me was not so interesting to me at that moment. But one day, while I was wandering through a market, my eyes were drawn to a cassette tape with a beautiful cover that turned up to be a compilation of Dream Dance. As soon as the first notes began to play, I was hooked.

It was something different and the whole thing felt like a journey to another world. I was immediately drawn to the sound of Brooklyn Bounce & Cosmic Gate. Their music was a perfect blend of Trance and House, and it felt like a revelation to me. Since then, I started to share the music with other people and I just can’t stop doing it.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

As a producer, I have always been open to exploring different genres of music. Tiësto’s sound I have admired for years. His music has a unique energy and has been a source of inspiration for me. Tale of Us had caught my attention lately. Their music feels like it’s from another planet and their ability to create a mood and atmosphere is truly impressive.

As a DJ I like James Hype, who I had the pleasure to meet during ADE last year. I was impressed by his DJ skills and it was a pleasure to meet him in person. As a producer, meeting other musicians and artists is always an inspiring experience, is a source of motivation to keep creating and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with sound.

How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music yet?

For years, I have been creating music that is all about making people feel good. Whether it’s energetic and danceable or more relaxed and mellow, my goal has always been to create a vibe that lifts people up and puts them in a positive frame of mind.

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with a new sound that combines elements of Romanian old folklore music with a modern, “electro-popular” twist. It’s a unique blend of real instruments and powerful electronic beats that I believe captures the essence of my musical style.

The process of creating this new sound has been both exciting and challenging. I’ve spent countless hours in the studio, experimenting with different instruments, melodies, sample packs and vocalists to create the perfect balance between tradition and EDM. But the hard work has paid off, and I’m thrilled with the result.

The final product is a track that is both soulful and energetic, with a native folklore voice, a powerful bass line that gets people moving. It’s a true reflection of my passion for music and my desire to create something that is truly unique. The track’s title is “Roxana Mag – Stiu ca mori de al meu drag – Sean Norvis Electro Popular Remix.

If someone wants to start listening to your music, which track should they listen to first?

I would say “Our Life”. It also comes with a story of how I met a beautiful friend.

What would you say is your biggest achievement so far?

In 2022 I had the song “Jungle Samba” ft. Lori Glori & Fabricio El Latino pre-nominated for Grammy. That felt great!

Where would you love to perform in the near future?

Printworks would be something huge.

Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?

Join me for a party, you’ll see plenty 🙂

What’s next for Sean Norvis?

As a musician and producer, I am always striving to push the boundaries of what’s possible in Electronic music. I’ve been in the studio recently, working on a new track with Khrym 58, an exciting new Melodic Techno alias from a well-known dude from the Tomorrowland scene. We’ve been experimenting the Melodic Techno sounds, and I’m confident that the finished product is going to blow people away.

We’re planning to release the track in the coming months, and I can’t wait to see how people respond to it. But that’s not the only exciting thing on the horizon. I am also proud to be organizing the Timisoara Music Awards in 2023, which will be held in Timisoara, the European Capital of Culture for that year.

It’s a tremendous honor to be a part of such a prestigious event, and I’m looking forward to showcasing some of the most talented artists and musicians from the local scene. I’m always pushing myself to be the best that I can be, and I’m excited to see where these new projects will take me in the future.
