Inteview with Italian DJ and Producer Gabry Ponte

Hi Gabry, we hope you’re having a great day & welcome to Rave Jungle! Where in the world can we find you located right now?

Hi guys, thanks for having me! A big pleasure. At the very moment I’m in Sardinia, enjoying a little holiday before the summer tour starts. (Holiday for me usually means that I’m working in front of the sea lol)

Let’s jump straight in & chat about your remix of ‘Friendships’ (Lost My Love) – how did the project come about to re-work this classic single?

Well I wrote to Pascal two years ago when his first version of Friendship (instrumental) was viral. I told him in my opinion he should do a vocal version of it and he said that he was already working on it with Leony and he asked me if I was up for a remix, I said ofc I was. It took us a while but we’re finally out with the remix!

When you start mapping out a plan for a remix, what’s the first thing you usually focus on?

Well if it’s a club remix the most important thing is figuring out the right sound for it, so I start with the drop. Sometimes I take some instrumental drops that I made previously for some bootleg or mashup that is working well in my sets and try if it matches with the song, and if it works, I start from there, otherwise I start from scratch.

How long was your version in the works, from start to finish?

Well, I made 3 different versions of this one, the first one as I mentioned before was drafted 2 years ago, when I got first in touch with Pascal, back then it was a kind of slap house remix, then when it came to releasing it I decided I needed a fresher sound. So, I tried something totally different, more techno, but it came out a remix that was too hard. The label wanted something that could work both for clubs and streaming so I re worked it and came up with this third version. So going back to your question, this version was made in a couple of weeks, but the whole process took more than two years!

In terms of the production, what most influences the direction of sound you take when remixing a record?

The music I’m listening to and most important the music I’m playing in my sets in that very moment.

What three words best summarise your musical style & sound?

Well, I like producing and playing different genres and I love contaminations. I try not to focus on a specific sound. As soon as I find a definition for my style & sound it means to me that it’s time to change it all again

And lastly, are there any other remixes or projects currently in planning for later this year?

Yes, there is a lot of new music ready to be released. On June 3rd my new single with LUM!Xis coming out. It’s called ‘We Could Be Together’. Then a couple of new remixes for some other big artists. Can’t wait to share this new music with you all!

Listen to Gabry’s remix below and enjoy!

Satori & The Band From Space make their Dutch return with spectacular new ADE show at Paradiso

Satori & The Band From Space will kick off ADE in true style by delivering a never-before-seen show at Paradiso on Wednesday 19 October. For Satori, who recently released his fifth album ‘Dreamin’ Colours’, it will be the first time in two years that he and his Band From Space will perform in the Netherlands. The spectacular new visual performance will be developed in the coming months especially for ADE.

Satori (a pseudonym of Dutch-Serbian music nomad Djordje Petrovic) has been pushing the boundaries of what a live performance can be both musically and visually around the world since his 2015 breakthrough album ‘In Between Worlds‘. With his groundbreaking ‘Maktub’ concept, he has bridged the gap between a ‘traditional’ performance and an electronic set.

Creating the sounds and beats on the spot creates a very different dynamic than if you plug in a USB and want to force the audience,” Satori says.

“If you manage to synchronize the tempo of the performance with the rhythm of the audience, then everything becomes relative, you merge into the whole and the music becomes more dynamic, the experience almost psychedelic. Playing this way is risky, but the adventure makes the musical journey exciting for everyone.

With that musical adventure, Satori will not only kick off ADE with The Band From Space on 19 October, but also immediately set the bar for all other artists at the international showcase festival for electronic music.

The performance is the culmination of an exhilarating summer, in which Satori has a residency at the iconic Club Chinois in Ibiza, performs at major international electronic festivals such as EXIT (Serbia), Off Sonar and Audioriver (Poland), and has several live recordings planned worldwide, including one already legendary ‘Maktub‘ show at the Pyramids of Giza.

The summer of 2022 also marks the start of Satori‘s own Maktub Records label, the first signed single being released at the end of June. To celebrate ADE 2022, Satori’s first release with The Band From Space will appear on the label.

Giolì & Assia deliver another breathtaking #DiesisLive to coincide with new track ‘Silence’

Shortly after releasing the title track of their upcoming album, Giolì and Assia return with yet another impeccable production in the shape of ‘Silence’. To coincide with the single’s release, the multi-talented duo have also delivered a sublime #DiesisLive, from the Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon in Iceland, both of which are available to stream now.

Racking up millions of views around the world with their now legendary #DiesisLive series, which sees the duo perform in remote and jaw dropping locations, Giolì & Assia have filmed a series of awe-inspiring chapters in one of the world’s most beautiful countries.

Serving as a visual exploration of the album’s title ‘Fire, Hell & Holy Water‘, the new setting is a stark contrast to the fiery forms in the dark, ashen landscape of the Fagradalsfjall volcano video, as the pair transform into white pure figures that echo their glacial surroundings. Shot from the icy tongue of the lagoon, Giolì & Assia give a raw and emotive performance of new single ‘Silence‘ as well as premiering not one, but two tracks from their forthcoming album.

Speaking about their experience in Iceland, Giolì & Assia said:

We spent 9 days here in Iceland! At the beginning this was just an impossible project even to think about, but after these 9 days we can finally say we moulded it into reality! We brought all our team here in Iceland, but more than a team they really are true friends and special people for us. They helped us make our dream possible with supporting our craziness every single day; without sleeping, eating, making long hikes, and putting in all their effort! Nothing was taken for granted!

We toured most of Iceland, experiencing the most beautiful sunrises, colouring our eyes with joy after long runs, filling our lungs and souls breathing the purest air in the middle of huge canyons, drinking water from glaciers, and danced under the coldest rain and laid on greenest grass just simply looking at the stars! This trip really made an impact in our lives, and we’ll be always grateful for it! We chose the craziest, most remote, pure, raw and surreal locations to shoot all our new album videos! Let us say this, you’re not ready for it!!! You’re not ready for this album!

Out now via Ultra Records, ‘Silence‘ starts off with their signature melodic handpan, as Assia‘s smooth and luxuriating vocals lure listeners into the dreamy soundscape, before adding an ethereal minimalist drop. Continuing to raise the bar with every release, ‘Silence‘ is yet another example of the pair’s inimitable star power.

Undoubtedly one of the most innovative and captivating acts in the music scene today, Giolì & Assia have perfected the art of delivering sublime and emotive soundscapes that capture the hearts of their legions of fans worldwide. Renowned for their capability to blend a variety of genres with a broad range of instruments, the diverse duo’s forthcoming album is a labour of love that will further showcase their unparalleled sound.

Underscoring its commitment to providing artists of all skillsets the latest cutting-edge DJ technology, AlphaTheta Corporation announces the release of the DJM-S5 from its Pioneer DJ brand. The new robust, scratch-style 2-channel DJ mixer for Serato DJ Pro is ideal for beginners or for artists looking to expand their battle mixing and scratching skills.

The DJM-S5 inherits a familiar layout to the flagship DJM-S11 two-channel scratch style DJ mixer and features a vibrant red-glossy design revealing the ornate construction of Pioneer DJ‘s MAGVEL FADER PRO. The large effect levers on the DJM-S5 are the same size as DJM-S11 levers, and control up to 57 different effects in Serato DJ Pro including paid expansion packs. Pioneer DJ‘s new mixer also provides four Performance Pads on each channel to control pad modes including Hot Cue, Sampler and Scratch Bank.

Features such as MAGVEL FADER PRO elevate the scratching experience while Feeling Adjust enables artists to adjust the crossfader resistance to their individual preference.  The brand-new Scratch Cutter feature applies the artist’s choice of six cutting patterns to the sample or track in time with the track on the other deck without crossfader movement. The DJM-S5 mixer also boasts the new Crossfader Hot Cue feature allowing artists to create a scratch-like sound with the crossfader.

The DJM-S5 is the first-ever Pioneer DJ mixer with USB bus power for on the go, plug and play performance. The new mixer also offers native control of Serato DJ Pro and Serato DVS. Artists simply connect the mixer to a PC / Mac running the software and start playing.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Product category: Scratch-style 2-channel DJ mixer

Model number: DJM-S5

MAP: $839

In-store date: Early June

NEW FEATURES

Scratch Cutter

The DJM-S5 emulates the popular transformer scratch technique by applying a cutting effect to the music in perfect time with the track on the other deck. Artists activate the scratch by selecting one of the six cutting patterns, turning on the Scratch Cutter function with the effects lever and moving the control vinyl or jog wheel (when using DVS control) forward and backward.

Crossfader Hot Cue

The all-new Crossfader Hot Cue feature creates scratch-like sounds with a sample or track without the need to move the control vinyl on the deck. Every time artists move the fader away from the edge, the track or sample on the relevant deck plays from the most recent Hot Cue point.

USB Bus Power and Standalone Mixer Versatility

The DJM-S5 is the first-ever Pioneer DJ mixer with USB power capability. USB power offers artists the flexibility to practice and perform anywhere they carry their decks. In addition, the DJM-S5 works as a standalone mixer—allowing artists to play music from a variety of sources such as analog vinyl records. Artists hold or release the levers to turn the effect on and off. Alternatively, artists can lock the levers to browse and scratch tracks with both hands while the effect is on. The mixer also features two banks to save effects for quick access.

Performance Pads

Artists looking to experiment their creativity can do so with 13 pad modes including Hot Cue and Sampler. Using the four Performance Pads on each deck, which measure 20.6 mm x 20.6 mm, artists can trigger samples and find new ways to remix their tracks live and add texture to the music.

Serato DJ Pro and DVS Plug-and-Play Compatibility

Artists plug the DJM-S5 into a PC/Mac running the Serato DJ Pro application and receive a host of professional performance features for free. The DJM-S5 also offers free support for Serato DVS—allowing artists to use analog turntables with control vinyl or DJ players to play and scratch tracks in their Serato crates. All sounds are sent to the stream via Serato DJ Pro—removing the need for external equipment such as a soundcard.

Braxton returns to Anjunadeep with the sumptuous ‘SpaceTime’ EP

Fast-rising Producer & DJ Braxton returns to Anjunadeep with the sumptuous ‘SpaceTime’ EP released on 30 May, featuring his acclaimed collaboration with Jody Wisternoff & James Grant, ‘SpaceTime’ which appeared on the recent Anjunadeep 13.

The euphoric and magical title track ‘SpaceTime’ was actually written during the depths of lockdown when Braxton felt he was struggling with a sense of purpose and days seemed to blur together.” After Braxton sent the demo to Jody Wisternoff and James Grant, the duo gave it their own special touch, complete with its other worldly sound. ‘SpaceTime’ has received a fantastic reaction when played out, including at Anjunadeep’s Printworks event and the Anjunadeep 13 live stream in Montenegro.

Braxton takes things deeper with ‘The River’ which was inspired by his love of the late ‘90s rave scene and iconic live acts of that era such as Orbital and Underworld. The hypnotic track is about Braxton finding his way “back into reality” after the lengthy and bewildering periods of lockdown.

(Don’t) Wake Me Up’ closes the EP perfectly and is described by Braxton as the darkest sounding track I’ve released. It fully represents the headspace I was in when I wrote it. This was me at the toughest point of 2021, when everyone was suffering, and I just escaped into music.”

On ‘SpaceTime’ EP Braxton said: I think we’ve all gone on a long, weird journey the last couple of years. But throughout that journey, I felt like I couldn’t move, like I was trapped in a dream. The SpaceTime EP is the sound of all that, and about slowly flowing back out of it together, moving towards moments that have meaning again.”

Brighton-based Producer & DJ Braxton has gone from strength to strength, following celebrated releases on Anjunadeep – ‘Indigo’ EP and a ‘My Stripes’ remix collaboration with Marsh, plus ‘Spaces’ and ‘Holding On’ with Lauren L’aimant on Colorize.

ARTBAT release new 4 track V/A release “Selected” on their UPPERGROUND label

Superstar DJ and producer duo ARTBAT continue to establish their young but impressive UPPERGROUND label with the fourth EP, this time in the form of a various artists collection. ‘Selected’ showcases music from the Ukrainian pair themselves as well as talented peers fellow Ukrainians, Woo York, Italy’s Stephan Jolk and Lithuania’s Noissier.

ARTBAT are coming off the back of a huge gig at the Ushuaia Ibiza opening party and their last track, ‘Your Space’ with Dino Lenny, is still riding high in the Beatport charts. As always, they evolve their sound once again on ‘Generation,’ a beautifully evocative track with skilled synth craft that blurs the lines between deep house and melodic techno. The lush chords ring out into an expansive sky and the rolling drums work to hypnotise the mind as sci-fi keys add further detail to this most atmospheric and cinematic of tracks.

Next up, Woo York are long time pioneers from Ukraine who produce a powerful, driving, dark yet sophisticated sound that is perfect for this label. Their ‘Like A Phoenix’ has a rumbling bottom end that brings drama and dynamism beneath the starry eyed melodies above. It’s a track that will have crowds lost in the moment on any dance floor.

Selected Upperground

Stephan Jolk’s emotional and energetic flair is showcased once again here on ‘Blossom, a highly atmospheric and peak-time track. It’s a slow burning and captivating track awash with scintillating synth patterns that lift you off your feet.

Last of all, Lithuania’s Noissier has become a firm favourite with artists in the space techno world and shows why with ‘Stay Close,’ a chunky track with hefty drums and drawn out chords that tease and please.

Selected features four artfully designed tracks, each of which goes way beyond the dance floor in their accomplished synth work and indelible emotional impact.

Forma debuts on Anjunadeep with 3-part EP ‘In Control’

Riding a wave of success off the back of their critically acclaimed EP The Peak back in March 2022, Argentinian trio Forma now make their eagerly anticipated debut on Anjunadeep with the stunning new three-track player, In Control.

With releases on Edu Imbernon’s Fayer imprint, Spectrum Spools, The Bunker New York and MEIOSIS, the trio – made up of Juan Hansen, Pablo Damian and Rocio Giorgi – have taken their sound global since forming back in 2020, playing standout live performances in countries including Brazil, USA, Canada and China, to name a few.

Unwavering in their commitment to originality, Forma’s unique sound palette and deep-rooted musicality are firmly on display across the EP. Masterfully worked from start to finish, the three-part package showcases the band’s impressive creativity, with flawless composition and a distinct cross-pollination of musical references shining front and centre.

The title track In Control opens the EP, combining luscious synths with warm lead vocals courtesy of band member Rocio. Still Alive features broken beats and vocal chops whilst Hold You leads with vocals from Pablo. The trio’s latest offering demonstrates their unique blend of vocal-driven electronica that has seen them supported by the likes of Gorgon City and Nandu.

Speaking on their Anjunadeep debut, Forma commented:

“In Control brings up the importance of emotional support; the value that a hug or a word of encouragement holds at a difficult time and how a simple gesture can have such an impact and make us feel alive again. This EP has a special place in our hearts and we hope that you will receive it with the same love with which we created it.”

Solardo and Comanavago team up for huge rework of disco classic on ‘You Make Me Feel’

Solardo continues to surprise with every move, with the Manchester duo’s latest collaboration a monstrous rework of Sylvester’s 1978 disco classic ‘(You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real’ alongside super-hot LGBQTI+ electro-pop duo Comanavago.

Wasting no time in getting down to business, the track thumps into life with that legendary bassline teasing alongside those scintillating piano arpeggios.

A galloping beat drops in with heavy sidechaining providing a nice pump to the groove before a powerfully resung vocal pays homage to that legendary performance by Sylvester. Some of that slow-burning energy of the original remains intact in the layout of this new version, with the euphoric breakdowns and drops that made it such a foundational track for dance music lovingly recreated here. Bringing the joyous high-energy stylings up to date with a chunky house twist, it’s set to be inescapable over the summer festival and Ibiza season.

The slick video, starred by Ben and Gabe of Comanavago features a glittering array of queer and drag performers paying homage to the lineage and scene that made Sylvester a star in the late ’70s, making for a fitting tribute for the larger-than-life star who was one of many who tragically died of complications arising from HIV/AIDS that claimed so many lives in the 1980s at the peak of the epidemic.

Solardo have rapidly ascended the ranks of dance music in the last few years to become one of the biggest names in the game. As at home making gritty club tracks as they are at collaborating with megastars like David Guetta, Tiësto, Marshall Jefferson, and Eli Brown, they have amassed a huge legion of fans across the world. Owners of three labels and of the incredible HIGHER festival in Croatia, Solardo are building their own ecosystem to allow them to release, play and book whatever and whoever they want, and it’s yielding big rewards.
