Tom Staar remixes classic Ferry Corsten track: ‘Punk’

Not everyone knows how to take charge on remix duty and simultaneously preserve the essence of the original record, but DJ and producer Tom Staar has proven himself to be more than capable.

Mere moments after committing his foreseeable future to Armada Music on an exclusive basis, the Ibiza-based DJ and producer has issued another slam dunk by remixing a long-standing classic from the early 2000s: Ferry Costen‘s ‘Punk‘.

Bringing Ferry Corsten‘s 2002 original back into the current dance music era ahead of the song’s twenty-year anniversary, Tom Staar‘s remix of ‘Punk‘ isn’t pulling any punches at all. With the iconic melody leading the charge and sturdy beats providing the backbone, this 2020 interpretation is as rebellious and fiery as you can expect.

Ferry Corsten Punk (Tom Staar remix)

Here’s what Tom Staar had to say about the remix:

I was a huge fan of the record, so I jumped at the chance to remix it. I was really into Trance back in the early 2000s and Ferry Corsten was a producer I really looked up to; he made pretty much all of my favourite records back then under various guises. I knew I wanted to give it a big room techno kinda feel along the lines of my recent record with Armin van Buuren called ‘Still Better Off’, so I started off working on some drums like that. Once that was done, the remix pretty much wrote itself.

Ferry Corsten continued: “Tom Staar gave ‘Punk’ a great new treatment! I really like the crossover element he has added to this remix, pushing its boundaries to live within multiple genres. I can’t wait to play this live when we’re given the green light again!

Neighbor Samsonite’.

With his unique take on the lofi hip-hop chill beats genre, Samsonite has had signifiant success with hits like ‘Ivory Tower’ achieving over thirty-thousand streams on Spotify alone.

waitwhat is a DJ and Producer duo from the Bay Area, consisting of Troy Skinner and Damon Dokhani. Initially meeting at UC Berkeley, the pair inevitably joined forces in June of 2017.

The amalgamation of Troy’s production skills with Damon’s solo experience under
NomaD, created a unique style that combines elements of “Hip-Hop, Alt-Pop, Trap and Bass Music”. One of the most successful tracks from the duo to date was ‘Alive (feat. Rielle)’ which achieved over three-hundred and ten thousand streams on Spotify.

Somebody (feat. Kristen Scheltens)’ sits at a smooth 92bpm and commences with a clean vocal coupled with some light percussion and spacious instrumentation. Kristen Scheltens’ vocal colour is relaxed yet also emotive. A partial delay on various lines throughout the track create a depth and creative flare that suits the mood the track perfectly.

Strongly panned elements of instrumentation create a body of sound that is a pleasure to listen to. The production of this single allows for each sound to pierce through the mix seamlessly without detracting from the prominent vocal line.

The rhythmic synth sounds that systematically spread out throughout this single are a real stand out feature. Fans of Dance and EDM will love this track. Make sure you follow Samsonite and waitwhat on Spotify to keep up to date with their upcoming releases!

Sonarworks announces sale on individually calibrated headphones

Now, at a time when it’s more important than ever to support music makers working outside their typical studio environments, European audio software developers Sonarworks have announced a sale featuring a range of individually calibrated headphones for use with best-in-class audio correction software Reference 4, including sets from popular headphone manufacturers, such as Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic and Audio Technica.

The sale begins on Thursday, June 4th, and runs through Tuesday, June 9th via Sonarworks‘ online web-store, with discounts up to 30% off.

Reference 4 has been embraced by music creators at all levels, from Grammy-winning mix engineers like Aamir Yaqub, Mark Needham, Koen Heldens, and Ariel Burojow, to artists and audio engineering students at higher-ed institutions, like the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Berklee College of Music, and SAE Institute.

Using Reference 4 along with individually calibrated headphones improves accuracy even further, ensuring a tailored listening-while-working experience, so studio engineers and music creators can trust what they are hearing in their headphones — whether working from home in a temporary professional setup, or working “in the box” while on-the-go.

So, even in times when an engineer is forced to work outside of the client’s studio, Reference 4 with individually calibrated headphones allows engineers to deliver the same reference sound, making cooperation between clients and engineers easier — even letting engineers mix tracks remotely for clients on the opposite side of the globe.

At Sonarworks, our mission is to deliver reliable reference sound wherever and however music creators work,” said Sonarworks Co-Founder Martins Popelis.

“All of our existing headphone calibration models ensure that you’re getting the ultimate accuracy out of your headphones, with increased precision on each pair we calibrate. By measuring and calibrating headphones individually, we can account for left and right channel differences between drivers as well as ensure that we’re providing improved accuracy across all frequency ranges for each set. This way we’re tailoring the response to each individual set of headphones and accuracy is improved to +/-0.9dB.

Axl & Arth are back with new single titled ‘Criminal’ ft. Jimmy Burney

Axl & Arth

Super-talented Stockholm based DJ and producer duo Axl & Arth are back with a new single titled “Criminal” featuring singer Jimmy Burney on vocals .

Axl & Arth dropped their first single back in 2015 and have since then made a musical journey from electro house and big room to a purer pop sound and with their latest release titled “Criminal” the leap is completed.

“Criminal” starts off with the captivating chorus and then moves on to a mellow well executed verse where Jimmy Burneys’ soulful vocals are accompanied by a tight beat and piano chords, leading up to the – at this point already well established – chorus.

Lyrically the song is about coping with your inner struggles in a high performing society, feeling like an invisible outcast in the herd of polished facades – something Axl & Arth have illustrated with the deadpan face in the artwork.

Criminal is however, despite its somewhat dark theme, a melodic uplifting pop song that has every potential to crawl its way into charts and playlists across the streaming platform.

Calvin Harris makes his Defected Records debut with ‘Live Without You’

Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum selling artist and heavyweight producer Calvin Harris will be making his Defected Records debut with the release of ‘Live Without Your Love’ on 11th June 2020, available to pre-order now.

The upcoming new single with Grammy-nominated musician and producer Steve Lacy is the outcome of a long-held ambition for Calvin Harris, whose love and respect for the UK house music label goes back over twenty years.

As a young and determined teen making music in his bedroom at age 15, Adam (aka Calvin) sent CD demos to Defected boss Simon Dunmore, like many budding producers who dreamt of being discovered by the best in the business.

He received in return first a handwritten note, which read: “I’m returning your CD but would like you to know that this is far superior to many of the demos we regularly receive.” Then came a merch package with a note saying, “Keep faith in yourself. I am sure we will do something together.

Calvin Harris Live without your love

Finally came a personal phone call from the A&R man and label head. Simon remembers the phone call well, saying that he disturbed Calvin while he was watching Neighbours, eating his dinner in front of the TV. Simon explained that he wanted to thank him for the demos he’d been sending and offered him further encouragement.

Years later, when Calvin‘s stardom had been realized on a global scale, he was introduced to Simon at Pacha nightclub in Ibiza, recalling the phone call to him and prompting a reconnection between the two. Since then the mutual respect blossomed, with Calvin occasionally reaching out to Simon for remixing advice, sharing industry insights, and to support Defected Records in DJ sets, radio shows, or playlists.

Fast-forward to 2020 during binduced lockdowns around the world. Like many DJs, Calvin took to live streams to try out new music and the keen ears inside Defected‘s A&R department picked up on an unreleased tune in one of his sets. That record was ‘Live Without Your Love‘. In turn, Calvin made a surprise appearance at Defected‘s monumental Virtual Festival series in April, bringing the relationship full circle in an organic and suitably innovative way.

Simon Dunmore added: “Calvin Harris and I have long-standing mutual respect that goes back 20 years when he initially submitted some of his early demos to Defected. I heard ‘Live Without Your Love’, reached out and our discussions led to our involvement on the project. I am all about long term relationships and the fact that Calvin remembers our first exchanges says so much to me, and clearly demonstrates that first impressions are lasting impressions.

The record sees Calvin at his most intuitive and rave-inclined, with club-ready, penetrating stabs softened by Steve Lacy‘s drawl and plenty of acidic synth.

Live Without Your Love‘ will be out on June 11th via Defected/Columbia Records, and is available for pre-order and pre-save now via link. Watch Calvin Harris‘ live stream set from the Defected Virtual Festival below.
