Shermanology, The Godfather & Tony Sherman bring the funk with their latest collab ‘Can’t Let Go’

Dutch duo Shermanology return with ‘Can’t Let Go’, their rework of a garage classic in collaboration with The Godfather and Tony Sherman for the newly launched D’eaupe Demand, out now.

A family affair, ‘Can’t Let Go’ sees the Netherlands-born/based, Curaçao-based siblings reinterpreting The Godfather’s classic ‘90s instrumental ‘Funk Power’, with the duo’s father – soul veteran from the ‘Sherman BrothersTony Sherman – supplying a James Brown-esque lead vocal. The result is a rework of a garage classic in a stylish new Shermanology jacket.

Speaking on the release, the duo said; “This track is a reflection of Shermanology’s history. Combining the UK garage with our soul roots…and there is no better way to top it off with the vocals from dad, Mr. Tony Sherman.”

Can’t Let Go’ got its exclusive premiere in Shermanology’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix debut, which went live on 10th March and contained all exclusives from the Dutch duo. The single is the inaugural release on D’eaupe Demand, the new label borne out of a collaboration between Shermanology’s label D’eaupe and Public Demand, the legendary UK garage label founded by Jimmy Low. At the core of D’eaupe Demand is the musical relationship between Low and Andy Sherman, and the creative journey they’ve been on since meeting back in 2001.

Brother and sister duo Andy and Dorothy Sherman, aka Shermanology, have spent the last five years refining their signature ‘soultec’ sound, combining their Caribbean and Dutch roots with a garage influence to eclectic effect. Last year they had huge success with ‘It’s A Killa’, their collaboration with Australian producer DJ FISHER, which came out on Fisher’s label Catch & Release and has over 35 million streams.

Their 2022 collaboration with ‘Tell You What It Is’ with Eats Everything received global support, whilst the self-released single ‘Boyz N Da Hood’ also has over 21 million streams and was named Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World, whilst their Spotify has over 100 million streams.

After a hectic year of touring North America, playing elrow events across Ibiza and New York and appearing at London shows with Jamie Jones and MK, the duo have a huge 2023 lined up. A festival-filled calendar includes Kappa Futur Festival in Turin, the Martinez Brothers-curated Cuttin Headz, Miami’s LaLaLand Festival, UK dance festival Beat-Herder, Rio’s The Town in September to a capacity of 100,000, and further events hosted by Defected, Dirtybird, elrow, Paradise, and XXXperience. Meanwhile on the release schedule are several exciting remixes and collaborations which will soon be revealed, and upcoming cuts for D’eaupe, D’eaupe Demand, Defected and Cuttin Headz.

Kickstarting off their 2023 in style, ‘Can’t Let Go’ is an uptempo funk fest from the extended Shermanology family – and a head-turning opening statement for the D’eaupe Demand label.

OLAN & QRTR team up on new Foreign Family Collective track ‘All U Need’

One of the most exciting projects of the year is upon us, a coming together of two of the most talented rising stars of the indie electronic music world – OLAN & QRTR. Individually these artists have been covered by the likes of Pitchfork, The Fader, Spin, Mixmag, and DJ Mag, to name a few, and this collaborative project brings the excitement to an entirely new level.

The first OLAN & QRTR music release, ‘All U Need’ is available now, April 11, on ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective imprint. ‘All U Need’ is rich with emotion, lead by chunky broken beats contrasted with OLAN’s silky vocals. It encapsulates the best of both artists, meshing QRTR’s incisive beats with OLAN’s rolling melodies.

‘All U Need’ started out as a Hudson Mohawke remix we were going to do together. I made a draft quickly and at one point we took it to Andrew Bayer’s house and jammed on it a little bit. I was working on the stems in Meagan’s car and I just thought we should make this an original. It all clicked. Megan’s music is really punchy and from there she was able to take what I had which was melodic and cute and she made it punchier,’ OLAN says.

QRTR adds, ‘Thematically, ‘All U Need’ is about breaking out of the loop of being in an environment or a relationship that doesn’t work out and meeting someone that’s open to accepting you as you are.’

Beyond this music collaboration, OLAN & QRTR are also set to join ODESZA on the acclaimed electronic music duo’s summer/fall North American tour. OLAN & QRTR are working on a very special live show that should not be missed!

All U Need’ is available now on Foreign Family Collective.

Check out the interview below!

Based on the artwork in your releases and social media, you have an amazing sense of fashion. What are your top fashion trends right now and how do you use fashion to showcase your personality?

I think fashion is a great way to convey your overall vibe and energy as a person. It can also establish whatever mood a person is in as well which is something I love to utilize. If I’m ever feeling like hiding from the world, you’ll see me out in baggy clothes and sunglasses covering me up looking like I’m about to go snowboarding or something haha.

But most times, especially when performing, I like to wear tighter, big outfits that give my audience a lot to look at/pick apart. Most of my fashion comes from pieces I’ve collected over the years, and a few of my inspirations for trends are ASAP Rocky, Billie Eilish, Travis Scott, and Ye (depending on what mood he’s in as well lol.)

What do you love about performing for web3 and online shows? How do you think bridging live music with web3 has opened new opportunities for both industries?

I love the ability to bring the intimate performance kind of setting in the Web3 space. Doing online performances like that allow a new sort of personal fan access to the artist, where I would perform in my home/studio. This can show my supporters a more in depth look at my day to day life and environment.

I’m absolutely looking forward to doing more online shows in the future and getting creative with location and stage setup/production. Web3 also gives fans who otherwise wouldn’t be able to experience my live show the ability to attend – which I think is beautiful, granted that my concerts/tour tickets typically cost more than it would to watch a performance online.

What are your pre-set and post-set rituals when it comes to performing at in-person concerts and festivals?

As a firm believer in God, the Universe, and spirituality – my pre and post show rituals consist mostly of prayer and meditation. Before I do anything else, I make sure to spend at least 10 minutes prior to my performance to simply sit still with no distractions around me and just breathe.

This gives me the space to also visualize my connecting to the audience and allows me to ask God for protection and guidance when conveying my art/message. In some cases, I like to also say a prayer with my team that brings a wall of protection around all of us as we enter into the environment.

Once I feel centered, I like to throw my catalog on a speaker and do a mini exercise, such as jumping around/dancing/doing planks, sit ups, and push-ups. Getting the blood flowing is crucial to having good energy on stage and my pre-show ritual gets me going every time. As for after, I also like to spend at least 5 minutes thanking God and the Universe for the opportunity to perform and the blessings in my life. The vibration/frequency of gratitude not only humbles you but also opens you up for more abundance.

How does it feel to be able to perform at flagship events like HARD Summer? Which of your songs do you think usually receives the best crowd reactions?

Performing on a massive festival stage for huge production events/concerts is like no other feeling in the world. I love the ability to run around the stage and I do my best to connect with each member in the audience. The better I can get everybody in the crowd on the same vibe, the more fun we have as a collective.

I honestly haven’t performed enough of my catalog on a stage like that (yet) to know what gets the crowd going most, but each song has its own purpose. The up-tempo dance music gets everybody moving, but my slower (deeper, moodier) records can put the audience in a trance. I guess I’ll be able to better answer that question the more big stages I have the opportunity to perform on.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of music? What are your favorite spots and things to do for fun in Los Angeles?

I’m a big gamer, and adventurer altogether. When I’m not working, I like to play games on my Xbox (Assassins Creed, Battlefield, Skyrim, 2K, and lots more.) Growing up in the mountains, my little brother and I’s first gaming console was the Gamecube. I remember playing Lego Star Wars, Freekstyle (dirt bike game lol,) Luigi’s Mansion, and other games like that.

We migrated to the Wii after that to get more “active” as my parents recommended, as if we didn’t spend enough time running around the woods as children haha. It wasn’t until about age 12/13 that I got my first Xbox 360 and started exploring that realm. I remember my Dad and I accidentally playing Elder Scrolls: Skyrim until the early hours of the morning like “whoa, where did the time go?” I also love to exercise in nature, or play basketball/baseball with whatever free time I have.

What goals do you have for your project in 2023 and how do you plan on achieving them? Are there any artists you would love to collab with for the first time this year?

The ultimate goal with DREAMERBOY is to go the guerilla marketing route. I plan on releasing some sort of music video/content for each song (Please Be The One Official Video coming April 7th.) With all of the visuals in place, the goal is to take DREAMERBOY across the world, starting with a nationwide tour.

How to find the best DJ mixer on the market?

Finding the best DJ mixer in the market can be a challenging task, as there are numerous options available and each one offers its unique features. But with some research and careful consideration, you can find the perfect mixer for your needs.

The key is to understand what type of mixing capabilities you need, how many channels of audio you want it to have, what kind of budget you’re working with, and other considerations such as effects loops and EQs.

Once you’ve determined these factors, then it’s time to narrow down your choices by researching different brands and models to see which ones offer all the features that suit your specific requirements.

We’ll go over some of the key factors you should consider when buying a DJ mixer.

Understand Your Needs

When looking for the best DJ mixer, it’s important to first consider your individual needs, preferences and you’re sure what type of device you need. Depending on the type of mix you’re trying to make, you may require different features than another mixer might offer.

Look into whether a mixer has readily available EQs and effects loops, as these can be incredibly useful for creating more complex mixes. Consider how many channels of audio you need, as well as the type of connections it offers (USB or analog).

Research Different Brands & Models

Once you have a good idea of what features and capabilities you require, spend some time researching different brands and models to get an understanding of the various options available in your price range.

Pay attention to the details and make sure that any mixer you’re considering has all the features you need, as well as good sound quality.

Take into account how user-friendly it is – if you’re a beginner, look for a model that offers an easy learning curve but still provides all the features necessary for more advanced mixing.

Check Reviews & Test It Out

One of the best ways to determine which mixer is right for you is to read reviews from other users who have actually used the product in question.

This can give you valuable insight into how well it works, as well as any potential issues or drawbacks that might be worth considering before making a purchase.

Finally, if possible, try to test different mixers out in person before committing to one – this will give you a better idea of how it feels and sounds.

Consider The Mixing Capabilities

When looking for the best DJ mixer, it is important to consider the mixing capabilities that are available. For example, many mixers offer EQs and effects loops, allowing for more advanced control over the sound.

Moreover, it is beneficial to look at the number of channels a mixer has to match your needs – if you need to connect multiple sound sources, then it may be beneficial to make sure that your mixer has enough channels to accommodate them.

Look into what type of connections a particular model offers – USB or analog – as this can have an impact on the overall sound quality of your mixes.

Look For Special Features

When looking for the best DJ mixer, it is important to take into account not only the mixing capabilities but also any special features a particular model may have.

Many mixers come with an array of sound-shaping tools, such as frequency cut-offs and filters, which can help create more complex mixes.

Some models offer additional features such as built-in samplers and looping capabilities, making them more suitable for those looking to create longer mixes.

Set A Budget

When searching for the best DJ mixer, it is important to consider not only the mixing capabilities but also other features that can make a big difference in sound quality and the overall experience.

It is vital to know your needs and preferences, as well as what type of budget you’re working with, to narrow down your choices.

Once you have a better understanding of what’s available and how much you’re willing to spend, you can then make an informed decision about which models will offer the features and capabilities that best suit your needs.

Compare Prices

When searching for the best DJ mixer, it is important to consider not only the mixing capabilities but also any special features that a particular model may offer.

Many mixers come with advanced sound-shaping tools such as equalizers (EQs) and effects loops which can be used to create more complex mixes.

Some models include built-in samplers and looping capabilities that can be beneficial for those looking to create longer mixes. Therefore, it is important to compare the prices of different models to find one that meets your needs at a price you can afford.

Make Your Decision

Once you have researched all of your options, read reviews from other users, and tested the mixer out in person (if possible), it’s time to make your decision.

Consider all of the factors that you have taken into account when making this decision — sound quality, user-friendliness, features, and price — and determine which model offers the best combination for your needs.

With a little bit of research, you can find the best DJ mixer for your needs and budget.

Final Word

When looking for the best DJ mixer, it is important to do your research and consider a variety of factors. The first thing to consider is the mixing capabilities that a particular model offers. Many mixers come with EQs and effects loops, which allow you to control the sound in a variety of ways.

It is important to look into any special features that a mixer may offer, such as built-in samplers and looping capabilities. Furthermore, it is vital to consider your budget when searching for the best DJ mixer to ensure you find one that meets all of your needs without breaking the bank.

With some research and careful consideration, you can find the perfect DJ for your needs and budget.
