Sónar Lisboa is kicking off the 30 year anniversary celebrations of the acclaimed Sónar Barcelona festival

On March 31st, 1st and 2nd April 2023, Sónar returns to Lisbon once again to present technology, creativity and the most advanced music in a renewed and inspiring format.

Despite only being the second edition of Sónar Lisboa, the event marks 30 years since the first ever Sónar festival in Barcelona, the founding city of the celebrated festival. Sónar Barcelona will celebrate its 30th edition between June 15th and 17th 2023. Three decades of Sónar as a space for discovery and inspiration, as a platform for several generations of local and international artists, and constant innovation in electronic music and culture will be commemorated.

Now, Sónar Lisboa 2023 unveils the first 24 shows in a program that will feature around 50 live performances and DJ sets, including, as always, emerging sounds and established artists. The Pavilhão Carlos Lopes, located in the city center, will be the main venue of this edition hosting 4 stages indoor and outdoor. With all the stages concentrated in the same space, and Sónar+D (to be announced soon) in walking distance away, Sónar Lisboa 2023 will offer a unique experience that will transform the Parque Eduardo VII into a place of celebration for Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night.

As it has done throughout its history, the Sónar 2023 programme covers the entire spectrum of electronic music, from the familiar and beloved dance floor sounds to more unorthodox, experimental tracks. Enric Palau, co-director of Sónar, explains:

“The festival celebrates its 30th anniversary with an entirely electronic programme, which celebrates club culture, the role of the DJ as a cultural symbol of our time and the diversity of sounds at the heart of today’s electronic music scene”.

Electronic music in its multiple and diverse forms is at the heart of Sónar Lisboa 2023. The first announcement is headlined by three unparalleled live performances: Bulgarian producer KiNK; the jaw-dropping AV show from Max Cooper; and the hypnotic, jazzy electronica of WhoMadeWho. The globetrotters DJ Tennis b2b Carlita (Astra Club) and Acid Pauli will bring their expansive and emotional vision of electronic music into their sets

Captivating DJs Mochakk and Folamour – the latter with his A/V show – offer euphoric celebrations of house music, as does Cinthie‘s retro live performance. In contrast, Polish sensation VTSS, Héctor Oaks live and I Hate Models (in an A/V show exclusive to Sónar Lisboa) will showcase the diversity of high-energy, relentless, cinematic modern techno.

Local heroes also return to Sónar Lisboa, from live kuduro-house beats by DJ Nigga Fox of the label Príncipe, to a dose of transatlantic reggae served up by Shaka Lion. They are joined by Yen Sung and Rui Vargas, idols in the Portuguese house and techno scene since the 90’s. Not forgetting, there is also the vitality of the new generation of Portuguese DJs Catarina Silva, Francisca Urbano, Luisa, and Vil, as well as the indie-rock band Sensible Soccers.

From the UK come two of the most celebrated pioneers of dubstep, Skream b2b Mala. There is also the intergenerational jungle of SHERELLE x Kode9 and one of Ireland’s best kept secrets, DJ Or:la. The echoes of UK raves have also influenced the heavy breakbeat mix of local mainstays Violet and Photonz – the two return this year on a back-to-back.

Sónar Lisboa 2023 also unveils its impressive AI-created visual campaign

This year’s visual campaign reinforces Sónar‘s commitment to unconventional approaches, processing 30 years of history through innovation, using new technology that is constantly evolving.

Sergio Caballero, co-director of Sónar, explains:

“Sónar has processed the last 30 years of visual campaigns with Artificial Intelligence. The AI has run 29 experimental sessions, each based on a visual campaign from the festival’s history. In seeking the ability to generate images that can represent each of these campaigns, the AI learns and generates a multitude of trial and error results. It is in the beauty of these mistakes that Sónar found the image for its 30th anniversary”. The same process engendered the image for Sónar Lisboa 2023.

Sónar+D Lisboa 2023 the annual meeting point for professionals and fans from all creative industries

After the success of the first edition, Sónar+D Lisboa 2023 reaffirms itself as the unmissable annual event for professionals and fans from all creative industries. With an emphasis on art, music, science and technology, it is a space for the exchange of ideas, in which collaborations and co-creations are developed.

The program of lectures, debates and presentations complementary to the musical program will be released soon.

Tony Kay has prepared a powerful mix of his Top 10 best songs of the year

We bid farewell to 2022 in the best way we know how: with music. This time, a multi-talented DJ and producer Tony Kay has prepared a powerful mix of his Top 10 best songs of the year.

Press play and get ready to welcome 2023!

1. The Martinez Brothers, Gordo, Rema – Rizzla feat. Rema (Mochakk Remix)

Absolute favorite track of this year, it just hits different.

2. Mr. V, Max Dean – Future Looks Bright (Original Mix)

The famous Hip-Hop sample brought to the House genre, obviously this track is in my top 3. Also, one of my favorite House music vocalists Mr. V is on it too.

3. Kevin McKay, Pupa Nas T, Denise Belfon – Work (Extended Mix)

The Masters at Work – Work is an iconic vocal that is globally recognized and I use it quite often in my sets. Nevertheless, this track reworked the original one and that’s what I really like about it.

4. TOBEHONEST – The Bulgarian (Original Mix)

Simple bassline, groovy hats, nice kick and a catchy vocal to top it off. What can I add, it just gets you on a dancing vibe.

5. PMAZII – Reign (Original Mix)

I love the drums; the rhythm is so minimal and pulsing. I love these kinds of tracks and especially this one, as I can get as creative with it as I want during my sets.

6. Francis (UK) – Found (Original Mix) (Finder Edit)

I remember years ago when Ninetoes – Finder was released and I heard it at the club for the first time, since then, I just couldn’t get over it. In spite of that, this edit just hits different.

7. TECH IT DEEP – Maria Maria (Extended Mix)

What an absolute classic track; again so minimal and catchy. By the way one of my favorite producers of this year is defiantly TECH IT DEEP.

8. De La Hoz – Who Loves The Sun (Edit)

Again, an old track with a Minimal Deep Tech edit, love it. The melody is a crowd catcher. Always does the trick.

9. Wade – The Melody (Original Mix)

The Spanish touch that Wade has on his tracks is quite remarkable. This one specifically is on my Top 10 because of that Andalucian touch.

10. Matroda – Mozart (Original Mix)

If Mozart was a House music producer, this is exactly what it would sound like. So captivating and identifiable, which adds a special feeling to the groovers on the dancefloor. So creative and hats off to Matroda for pulling this off.

Special D. remixes Dj Sammy & Carisma’s well-recognized hit ‘Prince Of Love’

“Prince of Love” was one of DJ Sammy´s first productions. The Spanish Star-DJ and hit producer, twice listed on DJ Mag’s Top 100, first released this single in 1997 with Carisma.

It charted at #24 on the German charts, reached #1 in the European dance charts and stayed for 15 weeks on the hitlist. Now the Hamburg-based DJ and hit producer Special D. has taken the track and refreshed it completely.

“The track `Prince of Love´ has always been something special to me, the first one for me in the role of a lead artist, as well my first chart hit as the main artist.

I received so many requests for cover versions or new mixes from all over the world, but declined every single one… except this one time! That was when Special D. reached out to me. I’ve known him for quite a long time now and couldn’t say no to his idea of taking the original vocals of Carisma and putting it together with his sense of the song. So it came out fresh and absolutely upfront,” explains the DJ-star.

Special D. aka Dennis Horstmann is a German DJ and dance music-producer, who landed a hit in Europe with the cover of Nena´s “Nur geträumt” back in 2003. Top 4 in Ireland, top 6 in UK, top 10 in the Netherlands and top 14 in Germany paved the way for him up to the TMF Awards, which are considered the most important music awards in the Netherlands, where he won the´best international dance artist´award.

His other chart hits include “Home Alone”, “Nothing I Won’t Do”, “You” or “Here I Am“. Also the “Suck My Dick!” number from his “Dickheadz” side project (together with Andy Judge) was even picked for the Hollywood blockbuster “Crank: High Voltage” with Jason Statham. Recently, Special D. collaborations with Le Shuuk (“You“) as well as W&W and Harris & Ford (“Come With Me“) caused a stir on the international dance charts and streaming portals.

DJ Sammy is one of the most famous DJs and producers in the world. With over 20 million records sold, plus countless awards, the global player from Mallorca is one of the world’s most successful electronic music producers, who had his breakthrough with “Heaven” in 2001. It surpassed 2 million record sales in Europe and Australia alone, reached #2 on the US Billboard’s HOT 100, before climbing to #1 in GB in 2002. Many TV appearances and award wins all over the world followed, and he entered the prestigious DJ Mag Top 100 DJ rankings (2005 #92, 2006 #61).

Thomas Lemmer presents his brand new album HOPE

www.thomas-lemmer.com

Sine Music is set to release the long-awaited new album “HOPE” by Thomas Lemmer. The album will be available on all known download stores and streaming services. The album will also be available in Dolby Atmos and High-Resolution Audio format.

HOPE” – an album name that couldn’t fit better into our present time. Thomas Lemmer produced the 16 tracks and four bonus tracks of the album during the pandemic. But the current events encouraged Thomas Lemmer to form an antipole with his music. His music helps to retake courage and to continue, even in seemingly hopeless situations.

Thomas Lemmer proves his versatility again with “HOPE“. He uses different styles like chillhop, chillstep, downtempo, pop ballads, ambient with neoclassical influences up to deep house on his current long-player. Despite all the variety, a common theme runs through the album and his unmistakable compositional signature and sound.

It is also extraordinary that he has dedicated himself to covering a song for the first time. With “THE POWER OF LOVE” (originally by Frankie Goes To Hollywood), he produced a reduced, almost acoustic version of this world hit. The album was mastered in High Resolution Audio format at Monoposto Mastering Studio (Robin Schulz etc.).

In addition, the album is released in Dolby Atmos format. For this purpose, the album was remixed and prepared by Eric Horstmann (Moderat, Rodriguez Jr., and others) at Immersive Lab Studios in Berlin.

Exclusive Interview with extremely talented DJ & Producer ZEHV

2023 is approaching and what better way to welcome it than to remember the main highlights of the past year. Music, unique milestones and new projects are some of the things ZEHV experienced in 2022.

We invited him to talk more about what this past year meant, what he learned and what are his plans for the holidays.

Check out the full interview below!

Hi, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. 2022 is almost over, we want to know what is your most important highlight of the year, both musically and personally?

Thanks for having me! My biggest highlight this year was playing the main room at Superior Ingredients in Brooklyn, I played before and after Franky Wah and got to play 2 completely different sets to a packed dance floor.

What was your favorite release of 2022 (of your own)?

This year my highlight release was ‘Ōkami’ on Mood of Mind. Heard it being played around the world and is a very meaningful release for me.

And what was your favorite track of the year from someone else?

Guy J – ‘Last Standing’ is a key stand out for me this year. Absolutely beautiful track.

Did you have any special standout shows this year either that you played or attended?

Since I already talked about my highlight earlier, Seeing Guy J play in NYC was a special experience for me this year. His sets are so unique and I always feel so inspired after attending, I actually made a track the day after called ‘Ghost’ that is now coming out on Manual music.

What was the biggest lesson you learned in life 2022?

Hmmm, not a new lesson but always continuing to learn how to manage my time best as possible to accomplish my goals.

And following on, what was the biggest lesson you learned in music?

Less is more.

If you could send yourself a message to you 5 years ago, what would it be and why?

Music is a marathon not a sprint, enjoy the journey.

How has your sound developed in 2022?

I’ve definitely been experimenting with sound design a lot more this year, I don’t have a dedicated studio right now so I have noticed my music leaning a lot more club focused energy wise.

Who would you say was the most innovative artist in 2022?

I have really been enjoying listening to Made in TLV recently. Super unique sounds and love their music.

Which label or labels do you think where at the top of their game in 2022?

Meanwhile Recordings absolutely crushed it this year, top quality and artists.

If any, do you have any regrets for the year behind us?

Never 🙂 it unfolded exactly as it should have.

What are your plans for the holidays?

Make music of course! and sleep a lot.

Just for fun, if you had to take a classic Christmas song and remix it, what style would it be and what could we expect?

Haha uhhh, if I had to…probably ‘White Christmas’ by Irvin Berlin, Progressive House, and you can expect it to be awesome.

Where will you be spending New Year’s Eve?

Most likely with friends having a low- key night, cooking food and spending it with the people I care about the most!

If you had to put 2022 into one sentence, what would it be?

2022 was intense, full of change, and one big adventure.

Listen to the track below!

Rave Jungle interview with DJ and producer Salvione

2023 is approaching and what better way to welcome it than to remember the main highlights of the past year. Music, unique milestones and new projects are some of the things Salvione experienced in 2022.

We invited him to talk more about what this past year meant, what he learned and what are his plans for the holidays.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. 2022 is almost over, we want to know what is your most important highlight of the year, both musically and personally?

Hi, it is my pleasure. Thank you for having me. Personally, my most Important highlight of the year was that I got engaged in May. My fiancé is one the most amazing people I’ve ever met. She’s there for me through all of the ups and downs of my life personally and in my music career. She’s my number one supporter and continues to push me to be better each day. I have to give her credit, I think about and talk about music constantly and she’s the real MVP because I know she listens even when she probably doesn’t fully understand what I’m talking about but she knows it excites me.

Musically, my highlight of the year would be starting my brand Elevate which is aimed at raising the overall vibration of the House music community, through music. It includes a weekly newsletter, Elevated Radio that is broadcasted in on 8 stations in 7 countries and has 600k+ weekly listeners plus a music production coaching program.

What was your favorite release of 2022 (of your own)?

I actually did not release any music of my own this year. I spent the year honing my sound and developing my music production coaching program as well as engineering for Danny Tenaglia who’s track ‘The Brooklyn Gypsy’ came out on Nervous Records and topped the charts on both Beatport & Traxsource.

And what was your favorite track of the year from someone else?

This is a tough one as so much great music came out this year but one that is really sticking out in my mind is the new one ‘Take Me’ by Martin Ikin and Joshwa. It is a great use of a sample and it just hammers when the groove comes back in. I played it a few weeks ago in Costa Rica and it went off. I actually had to take a video of the crowd while it was playing because they were loving it so much.

Did you have any special standout shows this year either that you played or attended?

My special standout show for the year was definitely last month at Antik in Costa Rica. It’s one of my favorite places to play. It reminds me of the New York underground scene in my early years of clubbing. It is a low ceiling, simple room with a Funktion-one and the crowd is one of the best. They are there to have a great time and we rocked into the early morning with a full room. We definitely created magic together that night.

What was the biggest lesson you learned in life 2022?

The biggest lesson I learned in life in 2022 was that everything works out exactly how it’s supposed to. The universe is working for you. You shouldn’t stress and try to force life to be how you think it should go. Take the pressure off and let the journey guide itself. I learned to surrender both in life and even while making music.

And following on, what was the biggest lesson you learned in music?

I think the biggest lesson I learned in music this year is that no one is going to come knock on your door with a gig just because you make a great tune. If you want to get bookings you have to take it into your own hands and that’s what I did. It feels really good to be in charge of my career.

If you could send yourself a message to you 5 years ago, what would it be and why?

“Just keep going. I know it’s tough and you feel like you’re working really hard and not getting anywhere, but just keep going. 5 years from now, you are going to do things you couldn’t even dream of at this moment.”

I would send this message to myself 5 years ago because I was waking at 5am to make music and giving it everything I had but the breaks were not coming. But it was those years and all of that hard work and dedication that has led to the successes I’ve had.

How has your sound developed in 2022?

I feel that I really have honed my sound this past year. I think the way it has developed the most is that it’s consistent. I used to make many different styles of music but I now know what my sound is and I’m really comfortable with where I am right now sonically. I’ve found the sweet spot of upbeat, fun, driving music with a touch of Soul and Funk that is made for the dancefloor but you can also enjoy it at home.

Who would you say was the most innovative artist in 2022?

I really like what Shermanology brings. I think it’s different from what others are doing. I find their sound refreshing.

Which label or labels do you think where at the top of their game in 2022?

There has been some amazing music out this year but I would say Snatch! Records has been really delivering and so has Night Service Only, especially being a newer label and from NYC I have a lot of love for them. I also think that 303lovers, Baikonur Recordings, and La Pera records have been at the top of their game as well. I’m very impressed with all of these labels this year.

If any, do you have any regrets for the year behind us?

I don’t have any regrets for anything in life. There are always lessons to be learned in everything. Even if something doesn’t work out, there is always something bigger and better on the horizon. You just have to trust and surrender.

What are your plans for the holidays?

I spend the holidays with my family. I bought the house next door to the house I grew up in and my grandparents still live there so I just walk across the lawn. It’s a fun time with lots of laughs, great food, and people talking over each other.

Just for fun, if you had to take a classic Christmas song and remix it, what style would it be and what could we expect?

I would have to go with Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band’s version of ‘Santa Claus Is Coming to Town’. I would definitely rework it into a roller of a Tech House track. Santa would be dancing into town for sure, hahaha.

Where will you be spending New Year’s Eve?

I haven’t totally decided. Since I was a teen, we would typically spend New Year’s Eve with the family and then head out to one of the parties in NYC in the early morning. I suspect a similar outing this year.

If you had to put 2022 into one sentence, what would it be?

On New Year’s Eve 2021, I told my fiancée and my best friend that I really felt that this year was going to change everything and it didn’t disappoint. So, to put 2022 into one sentence I would say that 2022 was life changing.
