Wehbba unveils his 3rd Album ‘Straight Lines And Sharp Corners’ via Drumcode

Wehbba

Brazilian techno DJ and producer Wehbba’s creative aspirations seem to grow day by day and following a series of globally impactful single and EP releases on the circuit’s leading label, Drumcode, he now unveils his long-awaited first album Straight Lines and Sharp Corners.

This expertly configured montage of instrumental offerings not only showcase Wehbba‘s refined skill set in the studio but also proposes an immersive conceptual study that echoes a tenacious dedication to his craft.

The introduction, “Prelude: Goya“, lays a deeply evocative foundation for the album that highlights the affinity between connection and conflict, in this case using harmonious contrasts of tension and bliss.

Narrating his daily journey to the market, Wehbba injects a flutter of arpeggiated sequences that run parallel with the organic sensibilities of his field recordings, providing a raw and relatable quality often lacking within the techno landscape.

Continuing this rigid dichotomy, Wehbba elicits grit and distortion with scintillating ambiances for “Hyper Real Decadence“, appointing Thomas Gandey‘s stark vocals to ironically convey the ‘brutalism’ of today’s reality.

Wehhba Straight Lines & Sharp Corners

Deluge” brings melodic synths to a slowly evolving Techno track, subverting the classic formula with arpeggiated acid synth and syncopated synth leads. The follow-up, “Basic Pleasure“, evokes the barren landscapes of Blade Runner from whence the track gets its name (the ‘Basic Pleasure Model’, Pris), inspiring the fast pulsating bass lines, loud ‘laser’ leads and ‘rave hoover’ sounds.

Venturing into “Dove Rush“, we’re reminded of Wehbba’s mastery for propulsive cuts as he fuses robust percussive elements with euphoric synth melodies to promote his intelligent yet driving strain of underground music. Inspired by the liberty and comfort of the 90s experimentalism, “Brainflex: Interlude” serves as the LPs palette cleanser. Following a series of intoxicating highs from his opening cuts, Wehbba provides listeners with a much-needed period of reflection, with hypnotic riffs stimulating and introspective response.

No Sleep” is another galvanic addition to the album’s streamlined concept, incentivized by the lack of sleep inherent to Wehbba‘s relentless touring schedule. Harnessing native sounds from the idyllic vistas of Bali’s jungle and coastline, he permeates the synthetic components with these organically recorded textures.

Motivated by David Caretta‘s fiercely raw basslines, Wehbba enlists the French pioneer’s production talents for “Sharpshooter“, delivering an electroclash masterpiece that represents infused Techno in its most tailored form. The succeeding track “Second Nature“, as the title would suggest, echoes Wehbba‘s authentic composition process; a free-flowing progression led by the music with little manipulation from Wehbba’s side. The effects are honest yet dramatic, with the cut proving to be a mesmeric peak-time anthem.

Perceiving his nostalgic raver days through current optics, “Residual Self” is a compelling offering reflecting Wehbba‘s journey of self-discovery as an artist. Adopting analog drums and timeless club synths, he references Brazil’s golden era of dance music and its sentimental effect on his own musical growth.

Inspired and composed over five years ago with Wehbba’s turbulent emotions at its core, “Coupf Of Doubt” is a resurrected addition to the long-player. Tweaking the aesthetics of the track to align with the album’s deep-rooted concept, Wehbba alludes to the idea of self-doubt through futuristic tones and playful arrangement.

Fully demonstrating his scope across multiple genres, the album’s penultimate track “14th To Grand Central” adds a dimension of ambient fluidity to the diverse collection of productions. Documenting his journey from 14th Street to Grand Central Station in New York with field recordings, the ethereal cut is reflective of the depth and detail in life that we often fail to recognize.

The album is rounded out with “Digital Sunset“; a sonic analogy of the peace and tranquillity felt when watching the sunrise in the early morning after an intense euphoric club experience. Using twisted harmonies and glitchy percussion to enact how the beautiful and the abstract can coexist, Wehbba enlists L_cio and his inimitable flute mastery to establish a ‘Café del Mar‘ ambiance.

Alongside this masterful anthology of productions, Wehbba explores the medium of film with a short movie titled “Form In Transition“. Narrating an original poem with fervid poignancy, Wehbba studies life’s paradoxes and their role in shaping the mosaic of humanity, whilst touching on an enlightened ambition to live with untainted intent.

Capturing the architectural beauty of Barcelona’s cityscape, director Laiae Flynn serves a deeply tranquil visual accompaniment, sound-tracked by Wehbba’s ambient “14th To Grand Central“. Completing his panoramic Techno opus, Wehbba unveils a new hardware-only live performance format, Wehbba Live Station, alongside his album and visual affiliates. Following a 10-year live setup hiatus, Wehbba embraces visceral vulnerability as he prepares to welcome a new perspective on mixing.

Restless in his forward momentum and pursuit of new sounds, Wehbba has ensured his relevancy in a fast-changing music scene, with his debut album contribution to Drumcode showing distinct disparities and maturation from his previous two long-players. Shedding all self-conscious tendencies, Straight Lines and Sharp corners is reflective of Wehbba‘s evolution as an artist and his desire to champion what resonates with him rather than faddish trends; to compose with the purity of intention.

This holistic approach to production runs parallel with the authentic essence of his field recordings, permeating all 13 cuts with virtuous flair. Alongside his seasoned talents across remix and collaborative projects, it is these observations and intellectual studies that have contributed to his artistic vibrancy and defined his production output over the course of his decade-long career.

Kevin de Vries remixes Chicane’s ‘Saltwater’

A full-fledged Chicane remix album was bound to hit the dance music realm sooner or later, and the first imaginative redirection for one of his timeless records has arrived today.

Already tried and tested on the live circuit by the likes of Tale Of Us (e.g. at Hivernacle, Barcelona), Kölsch and Minds Against, the ‘Saltwater‘ remix of Melodic House and Techno tastemaker Kevin de Vries sets the standard for all other Chicane remixes to come between now and the full release of the Chicane remix album in Autumn this year.

Turning the age-old classic into a Techno-tinged dance floor hit, Kevin de Vries does what he does best on remix duty Building on the legacy of Chicane and Moya Brennan with driving bass and haunting vocals, this edit of ‘Saltwater‘ brings the glow of the early days back into the world of dance music today.

Kevin De Vries Saltwater remix

Here’s what Chicane and Kevin De Vries had to say about the remix:

Chicane: “it’s always exciting to hear what someone else’s take is on a track that has been mixed a few times. All considered, it’s safe to say that this remix is a different, floor-filling monster.”

Kevin de Vries: “It was a big opportunity and challenge for me to put my hand to this essential classic. As many people know, Trance music always had a big influence on my sound. I get a lot of inspiration from the older Trance tracks, most of which are super energetic and full of emotion. I recreated the notes of one of the synths Chicane used and started with this from scratch. I used only a few original samples as I tried to give it my own touch. it was a lot of fun and I am overwhelmed by the feedback so far.”

Kevin de Vries is an electronic music producer based in Berlin, Germany. Showing his very own Trance-inspired Techno sound in his first EP called ‘A Journey Through Life‘, he gained support from some of the biggest players in the industry, including the likes of Adam Beyer, Sven Väth and Richie Hawtin.

Since then, he has played a significant number of large shows and festivals around the world, from performances at Tomorrowland, Awakenings, Loveland to gigs at Hï Ibiza, Printworks, DGTL, and Amsterdam Dance Event to last year’s tours in Argentina and India. In the words of respectable outlet Mixmag, “Kevin de Vries continues to lock down his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising Techno talents.”

Nastia’s NECHTO Records celebrate 2nd EP with release from Voin Oruwu

nastia
Nastia

Launching in the latter half of 2019 with an EP from an unknown artist, Nastia’s Ukrainian, NECHTO Records emerged from a distinctive and thriving techno scene, rooted in the purest sense of underground culture.

Setting out to curate dancefloor-focused techno that gave a particular platform to the underground rave sounds of Ukraine and the wider Eastern Bloc region, NECHTO promised raw techno energy with no compromises. Entering into the new decade, the second EP release is set to land from the mystic-futurist, producer, DJ, Voin Oruwu; the first-named artist to join the family.

Moving under a number of aliases, the Voin Oruwu guise of Dimitry Avksentiev is a multi-faceted character principled with both post-apocalyptic and euphoric rave sensibilities. Born out of the 2013-2014 Ukrainian social crisis, the sound of Voin Oruwu sought to channel the atmosphere of this period, one that, in his own words, felt markedly ‘post-apocalyptic’ and so formed the beginning of his story.

Nechto 002 Voin Oruwu

Already unraveling his story, his releases to date have followed long-play formats, with his 2018 ‘Big Space Adventures‘ album landing via Russian techno, electro outfit, Private Persons, he followed this run of form with the 2019 ‘Etudes from a Starship‘ album via leftfield Ukrainian label, Kvitnu. Joining the well-documented Kyiv-based rave crew, CXEMA, as a member, Voin Oruwu is becoming a figurehead within the Kyiv scene.

Voin Oruwu
Voin Oruwu

Debuting on NECHTO, Voin’s EP marries elements of tension with elicit dancefloor power, informed most notably by his residency as a DJ in the thick of Kyiv-based rave. The trance groove of ‘Iterance’ evokes emotions of togetherness, whilst ‘The Ticker’ combines assertive pace with lighter breakbeat patterns.

The unhinging, ‘post-apocalyptic’ roots to Voin Oruwu show through in the looping craze of ‘Circuit‘ alongside the bubbling anxiety and flitting pads of ‘Disturbing’. Directly inspired by CXEMA raves, digital bonus track ‘Sunray’ encompasses a true taste of the Kyiv gathering; the sun rises at 7 am and 2000 bodies meld together on the floor.

To celebrate the release of NECH002, NECHTO also announces their first label party to be hosted at Kyiv’s world-renowned club, Closer on tonight. Label head, Nastia invites Spanish machine wizard, Orbe to play live, along with Dutch selectors Deniro and Dimi Angelis who join for a B2B.

GusGus return to the release circuit with a new original single, “Out Of Place”

GusGus

Icelandic masterminds GusGus return to the release circuit with a new original single, “Out Of Place”. The single is arriving two weeks following the vinyl release containing two unforgiving remixes from Raxon and Johannes Brecht.

Out Of Place” will form part of the second installment of Remixes Are More Flexible, and is out now across all streaming platforms on OROOM via AWAL/Kobalt.

Out Of Place” highlights GusGus‘ affinity for rolling synth-lines and sharp, pop-driven vocals, courtesy of the duo themselves. Evoking loss and melancholia meshed with a hint of 80s flavor, the track depicts a colorful tale of love gone.

GusGus Out Of Place

Electronic music veterans, GusGus rounded out the end of last year with a surprise remix EP that took their 2018 album, Lies Are More Flexible, to a new creative level. Featuring the mesmerizing electronic sounds of CPI, David Alvarado, Metrika, and Henry Cullen, the EP pushed the sonic boundaries of their counterparts and delivered everything from grit to groove.

Now venturing into spring, the duo is gearing up to release part two of their remix packages, a 6-track EP that showcases fresh, new perspectives on their predecessors. Remixes Are More Flexible Pt. 2 will feature cuts from remix extraordinaire Mindksap, techno and trance pioneer Jam El Mar (Jam & Spoon), Egyptian rising house star Raxon, a remix from Biggi Viera himself, and two original singles.

Neversea festival wins another prestigious award!

Europe’s best beach music festival, Neversea just won another prestigious award! Its campaign “The Green Power of Neversea” won the award from the category Brand Activation Of The Year at The Event Production Awards (EPAs) in London.

The 9th edition of The Event Production Awards (EPAs) took place last night in London, United Kingdom. At this unique event were recognized and rewarded the teams and personalities that are involved in producing the largest outdoor and live events. These are the teams that play a key role in the production process or organizations that carry out this outdoor and live event.

Romania’s major seaside festival Neversea won the award from the category Brand Activation Of The Year with the campaign „The Green Power of Neversea”, developed in partnership with CEZ Group Romania.

The Green Power Of Neversea

Through this very impressive campaign, Neversea festival aims to become the first music festival in the world powered almost entirely with green energy, from a wind source, coming from Parcul Eolian Fântânele-Cogealac-Grădina owned by CEZ Group, in Romania, Constanta county.

Here’s what Bogdan Rădulescu, Head of Partnerships & News Business at Neversea festival had to say about this:

“We are very happy about this award! We thank CEZ team for their trust, support and courage to make this action for the first time in history. The video with Alex Parker mixing over 100 meters high, on a wind turbine, became famous worldwide marking the beginning of our efforts to turn NEVERSEA in a festival powered with green energy for the next 2 years”

Ondrej Safar, Country Manager at CEZ Romania said:

“The partnership with Neversea is a continuous source of inspiration for us in our challenge of bringing the green energy closer to the young generation. We wanted to create awareness and attract the Neversea public, a representative public for the green generation, so we did it. This international recognition of our activation make us very proud and happy!”

The Green Power of Neversea” was launched back in 2019, with a global premiere experience: Alex Parker was the first DJ in the world to mix on a wind turbine, at over 100 m high, located in the largest wind farm in Europe – CEZ Wind Park.

For the first time, electronic music was heard from the top of a wind turbine, in a 5 hours mix, in a unique setting.

Viberate demonstrates Big Data’s power via IDMA Nominations, at Winter Music Conference

Viberate is bringing data-driven insights and a better approach to award nominations to Miami this month, as part of Winter Music Conference.

First, the live music data platform has surfaced nominees for the WMC‘s high-profile International Dance Music Awards (IDMA), with the final award going to the nominee who receives the most votes. Viberate will also be hosting a panel on the WMC Main Stage with media and industry voices addressing the importance of data for live music and festivals.

For the second year, Viberate has analyzed five key data points to determine which artists had the greatest impact in the previous year. After the WMC determines the award categories, Viberate looks at artists’ social followings, gigs and performances, peer connections and network, fan growth, and, importantly, fan engagement “because you have to be a human to engage,” notes Viberate co-founder Vasja Veber.

“We chose indices that would present a balanced, neutral picture of who has real traction in particular sub-genres and formats,” explains Veber. “We didn’t want this to devolve into a simple bot popularity contest. So peer connections, fan engagement, and live shows all play into our calculations.” (The full list of nominees can be found here.)

Viberate‘s data-driven approach is a natural extension of their massive network of carefully curated artist, venue, and festival profiles. The platform will share what it’s gleaned from years of managing and analyzing data at a discussion on the WMC Main Stage on March 18 titled “Data Science–Can Social Media and Streaming Metrics Be the Deciding Factor Between Profit and Loss?”

The panel features producer Deniz Koyu, entrepreneur and artist Arabian Prince, Rolling Stone’s Emily Blake, Napster’s André Glanz, and Veber, for a discussion of how dance music events and artists can best use data to boost their business.

“The margins of so many events and tours are extremely thin,” Veber says. “Data can help ensure we have more sustainable, thriving live music events and more successful touring artists. This is about more than tracking likes; it’s about getting a real data-informed picture of who’s getting traction and what’s working.”
